The 109 gear selector has started to stick, is this common and is it fixable.

I like the idea of the having specific sections, top job to who ever created it.:)

Not clear what you mean by sticking - do you mean won't go into or out of a specific gear? or just the lever is difficult to move?

If the former, it is likely to be internal to the box, and may be either a symptom of serious problems with the synchromesh or even more serious problems, or possibly just the selector loose on the selector shaft.

If it is just the lever is getting hard to move, even in neutral, this is very fixable. It is probably friction between the ball and the surfaces it works on. A few drops of oil will probably fix it although powdered graphite is better as it does not attract dust. Even better is to remove the floor, and remove the complete lever assembly, dismantle it, and reassemble it well lubricated with graphite, or, if you live in a wet climate, perhaps graphite or MoS2 grease. This also allows you to check the other possible problem - an accumulation of mud, sticks, rats nests etc.

Hope this helps,

John

Thanks John, it is that the selector is getting harder to move. I will try the lube.

In the 23 years I had my Series III, I probably had to lubricate the ball at the bottom of the gearstick a dozen times.
I never bothered with anything more sophisticated than a quick squirt of WD40, but probably would have tried powdered graphite if I was driving in dusty conditions.

Mine started giving trouble coming out of 4th gear. Had to time downshifts on uphill runs nicely at 55 KPH, or she'd jamb in 4th.
New bushes and bearings and synchro rings and,,, or, another gearbox.

You may be lucky, and it's just sticky selectors.
Here's hoping.
