evening all!!! Well I've finally gotten hold of a starting point for my project.....a 1986 classic. Needs quite a lot of work, not to mention parts...... but at least it's a nice tidy shell/chassis. If anyone has any parts taking up valuable shed space don't hesitate to pm me! My first question is does anyone know the legalities of removing the efi (or whats left of it ) 3.5 and replacing it with a 4.4 P76 carby donk......as I have 1.....and want to make use of it........and makes it a lot easier to rewire the car. (bare gutted shell  ) Anyhoo......my sincerest and heartfelt thanks go to wortho for the project kickstart......let the long road begin

Now you can change your handle! All the best with it though and I hope not to see to many posts brought through frustration!

Shouldn't be a legality issue for old-teching the vehicle but best to look into it (probably ring the RTA to find out, better to be safe than sorry).
Pity you're not in QLD, I have a few bits left pending on what you're after.

Not that the mechanics would ever think twice about it, but emissions would be the problem.

Emissions on these vintage Range Rovers are pretty simple, plum up all the hoses to the existing gear and there you go. a 3.5 V8 for example from an earlier Rangie will comply despite the differences in comp ratio
Most places are pretty clueless to that sort of thing, as long as the safety aspects are OK there shouldn't be any issues. Some inspectors are pedantic and want to know the ins and outs of your ******** from experience.

What sort of inspector did you take it too? A proctologist?

They think they are dobbo
Just from experience, I submitted one of my Rangie for a RWC and they picked the living crap out of it even a torn seat that wasn't that bad in the first place.

The problem that you are going to have is that the 4.4 litre P76 engine was only designed to meet ADR 26 - fitting of positive crankcase ventilation.
Your 1986 vehicle was designed to comply with ADR 37 and ran on unleaded fuel. You will be required to have your 4.4 meet the 1986 standards which was achieved by the use of the EFI.
According to DOTARS "National Code of Practice for Light Vehicle Constriction and Modification" (VSB 14) (http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/safety/bulletin/pdf/NCOP3_Section_LA_Engines_3Feb2006.pdf)
LA31 Section 1.2 "Modifications Requiring Certification Under LA Approval Codes. * Fitting equivalent engines (within 20% of original power and engine weight)."
LA31 section 2.2 "Replacement components such as camshafts, carburettors, engine management systems, exhaust systems, etc. are not permitted unless it can be demonstrated that the vehicle continues to meet the appropriate gaseous and noise emission standards"
You should also read LA 31 Section 3.1 Gaseous Emissions and Fuel Systems.

it's actually a feb 86 which I think is still super.......just?!?!?! Someone said july 86 was the intro for unleaded, dont know if thats correct.......I was only 12yrs old at the time:p The only reason I'm wanting to go carbie/s is that this thing is gutted and I mean all wiring is gone......so I thought far easier to go carby.......or even straight lpg.And when I say parts needed......most of the interior........dash, column controls, headlights, tail lights,grille........it's pretty much a rolling shell.........so I guess I get to put in the good bits from the word go.......24 splines......4.11's.......4.4L and btw....is the ZF an electronic box? if so it'll have to go

It is easy to check what ADRs which must be maintained. There will be an aluminium compliance plate with the build date and compliance date and a list of ADRs the vehicle was designed to meet.
You can use a carby engine so long as it meets the emissions specified by the ADR. Not always easy.
