A big thank you for this section, goes to Pat, Unca Inc, bewdy.:D
I've just had an idea. Pertaining to my own S3. With the engine gearbox transplant, I've got to find another way to steer her. The nice big powerful brake booster from the engine donor vehicle, takes up room where the Landy steering box sits. The solution is to fit the steering box from another vehicle.
So far, Toyota SR5; no good, it bolts outside the right hand chassis rail.
The inside of the right hand tyre hits the steering box pillar before full left lock.
Holden V8 Commodore power rack and pinion? Got one in the backyard. Hmm, maybe not a good idea.
Holden Rodeo box looks like it will fit, it bolts to the inside of the front right chassis rail, and the rearward facing pitman arm, even looks like it will sit over the original Landy drag-link. With a little adjustment.
This is only a quick, "line of sight", first check, but I'm pretty sure it will work.
Now I have a choice. 3 vehicles side by side, at the local wreckers.
A Holden Rodeo and 2 Jackaroo's.
All heavier than the Landy, so the steering weight should be no problem.
Do I go for the manual, Rodeo, or the same Jackaroo steering box?
Or, do I pay a little extra, and get the Jackaroo power-steering setup sitting beside it in the wreckers yard.
Has anybody ever tried any modification similar to this idea of mine?
If so, how did it go?

Hmm, maybe I should have anyway.
I do recall seeing a photo of you with a rather large gun.:D

Shorty both Slunnie and Banjo have powersteered their Series vehicles. I think a few other members have as well. Have a look at Banjo's build up and Slunnies site for some ideas.

I'm not familiar with any of the steering setups you mention, so I probably can't be much use. But I would be looking at a steering box more or less where the relay was originally with a shaft having U-joints to reach there.

Huh?
Banjo used the Holden box from an HQ or similar, it sits outside the chassis rail.
I can only try it and see. The only mod I would need to do, apart from a fabricated mounting plate, is to slightly bend the 2 outside mounts for the battery box. Then the steering column will pass under that freely, along the top of the chassis rail, and connect with the Daihatsu truck steering column.:)
If it doesn't work, I can always take it back, and keep looking.
They are locals.

Hi Shorty
I didnt really consider power steer as been a big fella yanking the wheel wasnt the biggest problem that needed sorting.
Look at a Landcruiser setup, they are common with power steer and work a leaf spring front end,Jackapoos and similar run a torsion bar front end,may be alot harder to graft on.

Evening Andy. Yeah, me little fellah.:D 5 foot 6 and 8 stone wringing wet.
Never bothered about power steering before either. Had old 1948 to 1955 model Bedfords with "Armstrong" steering, Fordson Tractors, you name it, but, injuries and birth date all conspire against us.
Just from a quick look see, the Jackaroo steering box should fit nicely, and line up with the Landy drag link. The big bugger shaft, that carries the steering damper. And like I said, the new extended steering column will run clean as a whistle, under the battery box.
And, it will sit on the inside of the front right chassis rail, with the Pitman Arm in exactly the same place as the existing relay arm.
Doing it that way, I shouldn't have to worry about any difference in suspension types..... I hope.:)

Hi Shorty, How'd you go, I grafted in the entire steering set up from a Defender 200Tdi into my S3 stage one, it was a bit of work but fitted ok, steers magic now, I can even do a U turn in the average size street now, being able to get full lock before rolling helps heaps. Cost around $200 for the 2nd hand bits, & took about a week to do. A bit of welding, cutting Mudguard inner panels & patching up to do. It was all approved by our local vehicle inspector. I know the #3 is slightly different in the front chassis, than the 3/1, but a buddy of mine did the same to a Falcon re-powered #2 & he didn't have any more grief than I did.

Hi Shorty, Footnote to the last post, you have to use the Pittman arm from a Discovery, else the Defender arm fouls the RHS front spring, Bill

No real problems with the Jackaroo power steering box. Drilled a couple of holes in the front right chassis rail. Welded in some tubing to re-strengthen it.
The box sits inside the rail, and the Pitman Arm sits directly over the original spot. Less than an inch higher.
In fact, for the first time ever, the damned steering linkages actually look even.
A Holden Comode door steering shaft, with a couple of uni joints, that all connects to the original Daihatsu steering column, which now comes through the firewall about 2 inches further down than the original.
Coz I now have a really big brake booster there too.:D
Now all I have to do, is find a place to hang the damned power steering pump.:)
Oh. And get that stubborn mongrel transfer case off the back off the loosest wobbliest most buggered up all finished gear box I've ever rattled in my life.:D
It is shot.

Have a look at a Camira power rack. These are popular with hot rodders for beam axle front ends. The tie rods come from the centre of the rack, not the ends, so this solves the bump steer problem you get with a beam axle if you use a normal rack with the very short tie rod ends coming from each end of the rack.

Oooh. Power, rack and pinion steering? On a Series Landy?
My. How simply spiffing.:D
I might look into that Brian, thanks. I had thought about "R&P" before, but gave it away as not so viable. Because of bump and grind.
Of course it still doesn't solve the problem of finding room for the pump.
I know. Off the front of the engine, that'll do it won't it.
Oh well, at least I'm off the streets and only knee deep in it.:D
