Long range tank for LWB Sation Wagon

I am looking at a LWB wagon.

Is there an easy add an extra fuel tank to extend the range?

Being a station wagon variant and the tank being at the rear of the vehicle sill mounted tanks may be an option.

Additional fuel tanks off a SIII Hardtop or any series with mid mounted tanks would be my personal choice, located under the drivers seat. Dinty showed me a little trick one time showing how these tanks can be mounted on either side of the vehicle with just the rotation of the filler hose and fuel line plumbing. To do this you'd have to replace the location of the battery to the engine compartment instead of under the passengers seat (this alone has it's advantages) and mount an additional tank on the passenger side. This would put the majority of the weight of the fuel in the middle of the vehicle and with your existing setup would triple your fuel capacity.

Hi Dobbo,

Very interesting as I did not think this style of tank would fit. It would require a re-routing of the exhaust pipe, but that needs replacing anyway on the unit I am looking at.

How do you fill these extra tanks as I see that it would be hard to install a filling spout, due to the rear doors. I assume that one would need a pump off the main tank at the rear?

I have a Ser3 Stage1 Wagon I will be parting out.
It has a custom under drivers seat tank,the filler is ontop of the right gaurd.
Im in WA so if you arent freight would kill it,but if you are interested let me know.

The army 110 wagons have underseat tanks with the filler behind the passenger doors and a hose running under the passenger floor with breathers to reduce air in the hose. I have seen 100 litre tanks under the drivers seat on Counties with fillers in the front guard and also using a Y piece joined to the rear tank filler.

As a last resort you could use the Series 1 and British Army Series 2 type and lift the seat and have a screw cap on top of the tank, I don't know if it is legal to fill a tank inside the vehicle, may depend on the age as Series 1s have to do it.

My County wagon has an aftermarket replacement tank of 130 litres capacity. The rear ant-sway bar had to be removed to fit it. Don't know the make. It was already on the vehicle when purchased.

I have no idea. Our III has dual tanks, one on each side, which we find meets our requirements. From memory it was fairly cheap and relatively easy & straight forward to fit.

I have a series 3 LWB SW, it has a 65L tank under drivers seat and 90L at the rear. I have done 920km driving it easy with 186 Holden motor. Its a little fidley to put the tank in but well worth it if your doing long trips.:)

Our series 3 farm vehicle has 3 fuel tanks and 3 fillers.

My 110 has an auxiliary tank between the prop shaft and the LH chassis rail, from the back of the transfer case to the next cross member. This space is occupied by the exhaust in a S3 (the 110 has the exhaust entirely outside the chassis) but you may be able to reroute it. Filling is via a branch from the main filler, running inside the wheel arch.
