can anyone shed some light for me ?
i have a 2001 D2 that has no CDL . it has been suggested i could put the snout of a CDL xfer onto my box. do i need to get the internals as well or did lr just take the connection off the housing ?

alternatively will any model D1 or early D2 xfer fit in place of the xfer i have ?

Any early D2 case will fit, and any after 2003 with the CDL fitted.

D1 case will fit, but the advantages of a later lower Km case would be a better prospect, say 1999 to 2001(early) or 2003 onwards.
You could fit a snout, BUT, most of the time you can pay too much for this so you are better off with a later case complete IMHO.

ok, having taken a look at my xfer box, its "looks" like all the mechanism for the cdl are still there, just LR have taken away the nut on top. my thought is the side plate that is held on with 7 bolts that exposes the cdl shaft and fork could be taken off, and a new plate fabbed with a machanism that operates from the side instead of the top. anybody had any ideas like this or experience ?
looks like a major operation to take the xfer case off and swap it for another one with cdl, especially when my car is fairly low miles and there is nothing wrong with the box.
anyone got a broken xfer that i can use for a jig to see if i can fabricate this mechanism. might even be something i could make up for other ppl if it works out how i am thinking.

you dont need to do much to get to it with more than enough room
unbolt the cross member under the gearbox, put a jack under it to lower it onto a jackstand and then unbolt the gearbox and let it tilt down, IF your tcase has the nut sticking up out of the top already that will give you all the room you need to fit up almost anything you can think of.

If you can get an air operated double acting actuator you can set that up to actuate off of vehicle vacume so you dont need to cut extra holes in your gearbox cover or anything else.

When there's no spigot there's no locking internals either, so its not just a need to fit the operating mechanism. eg the non-locking ones have a different front output shaft without the locking teeth.

so how hard is it t drop the xfer case out if i do want to replace it with one with a cdl ?

if youve done the lowering as previously mentioned its just a case of dropping off the propshafts (take the rear one out completely) disconnecting the handbrake cable and undoing about 7 or 8 bolts..

it does differ slightly in that you will have to support the gearbox itself on the jackstand instead of under the tcase...

word of warning, when you go to put it all back together make up some guide bolts to help line it all up or more than likely you will stuff the top tcase seal.

-----edit----------
forgot... you also need to disconnect the range selection mechanism
