Hi Everyone,
I registered on this website for several weeks.
Australia seems to be the paradise for old Landies ... I saw there were a lot of Series 1 enthusiasts ! unbelievable for us here in continental Europe (France) and ... congratulations !
I have a request : I look for a 107 pick up ...
I have a second request : who knows how (and how much !) such a car could be sent to Europe (France / Spain / Germany) ?
I wish you a happy new year
my best

hi there - and welcome to the forum.
As for a 107 - there is plenty around in Australia but freight could be a killer.
All the best

Would imagine a transport company would tell you how much, dont see you getting much change out of 5 grand oz dollars for sea freight to europe, how much do you really want a 107?

6 months ago I was told that a transport from NZ to Belgium was around 2.000 AUD. This price appears to be not too expensive if one consider that travelling by car and a trailer from France to UK or elsewhere to Europe to find a 107 will cost the same if not more !!!

You must want one bad - but i would check those prices first.
I looked into bringing a S1 Fire Engine in from New Zealand last year, the freight was expensive & then there was the quarantine issues (as Land Rovers have open box chassis and it had to be extensively clean internally).
Well all the best

so, it's so hard to import/export vehicles to/from Australia ?
anyway, let's see if an opportunity can be found and then the second round of complication will be discussed !

so...where is the cost? Fuel? Cross channel ferry? what about the tunnel? trailer hire?
fuel is obscenely expensive, and the ferries wouldnt be cheap with a car trailer either

One would think that good old jolly England would have plenty of Landys seeing as they made the the little fellas there, maybe looking at getting one from Africa may be another avenue of thought, there is big mobs of old Series over there and dare say you get one for a song, importing of vehicles is never easy, some countrys demand you actually own the vehicle for 12 months before it gets a ride on a ship, import and stamp dutys can inflate prices quickly, no such thing as a fixed quote there is always something you or they dont see, sometimes the too and fro with paperwork just makes it all too wierd and frustrating at the best of times. Not to mention you never get what you pay for and when you are dealing with a delear to source vehicle and do the appropriates, what you see pics of is not necessarily what you get and remember containers are lost of ships regularly, happened to a mate of mine who imported a Mustang, its on the bottom of the Ocean somewhere, expensive excerise, dont forget insurance and plenty of it

Remember when dealing with the Pound and Euro the exchange rate is shocking in Oz moolah, Pounds is 3 to 1 nearly, its terrible, a 10pd rubber seal will cost you near 30 bux before its even in the mail, its robbery I say, hiway robbery!!!!!!

hi there,
fuel and highways in France are expensive, to cross the Channel too and to rent a trailer is not cheap ; moreover I live in Southern France, close to the Spanish border ... it means I have at least to drive 1200 x 2 kms for a trip in UK and 1500 x2 kms for one in Germany !!! Such a trip will cost at the end around 800 euros (i.e. 1300 AUD).

Hi People
Once again I have to say "Geez I hate dial up" NYE resolution - get broadband at the folks place. I tried this post yesterday but it failed on send.
The economics of exporting a LR from Australia may not be as bad as one thinks. A friend recently sold 2 1960's VW combis (the split screen type) on ebay and both were bought by a buyer in the UK. The buyer contacted a freight forwarding agent and the vehicles were picked up, containerised and shipped. Customs for the EU are no where near as stringent as Australia, because they have land bridges from the African and Aisian continents. Why protect from something that can walk or fly here anyway. And the last and most important issue is that most LR in UK have chassis rot, a new chassis from Richards or Marshland cost about 1,700.00 GBP which will go a long way to to off-set the cost of shipping from Oz.
Talk to Tim Pickford from Whirlwind Spares in the UK he knows the pitfalls of shipping LR parts from Oz to UK and will have some ideas for you.
I would think that you would be able to have a container landed in Marseilles en-route from Oz via Suez. There are a lot of empty containers leaving Oz and a lot of EU manufactured items waiting for those empty containers in France and elsewhere.
Take a holiday and find a decent vehicle while you are here, I posted an ad recently for a 109 available in Newcastle NSW (http://www.aulro.com/apc/showproduct.php/product/1176/cat/500), it may still be available. The big problem is that all Oz LR will be RHD and you may have to convert to LHD for France.
Cheers
Diana
ADDIT: Just remembered, I recently got a estimate for shipping a S2B from Sydney to UK, the estimated cost was $6,500.00.

Hi Everyone,
thanks for interesting replies ; it's true that freight from Australia to France (or adjacent countries) is a little bit more expensive than to buy one lovely 107 around here but :
- cheap 107 in western Europe usually need to be rebuilt totally (as you said more rainy days here than in Australia and frame and bulkhead are often deeply rot) ;
- it's not a big problem to drive a RHD car in France ; it's just funny on small roads and in town !!!
- it seems there are a lot of original 107 around you.
thanks also for the 2 links.
keep in touch
