I'm thinking that I'll rehub my trailer for a different stud pattern.

Are trailer hubs all much of a much in terms of quality. ie, the ones at Supercheap are as good as any or are there good hubs and bad hubs?

Also, are there good and poor bearings? Are Timkins ok?

TIA

OK, spit it out! What pattern?

Are you going 6 stud LC pattern?

Nothing wrong with Timkin - they made the bearings in the hubs of your D2 and my P38A

You might get old stock but I buy alot of bearings for work and they have started coming through made in China. Do what I do look at everything you buy and see where it comes from you will be surprised, maybe.

I thought the timkins may be ok. I read on Expedition Exchange I think it was that they use these bearings when they fit lockers etc, but when I saw them in supercheap I thought again. Oh well, I'll hit up supercheap for the bits then rather than a trailer shop.

Well, I'm not sure yet. I've got a heap of D2/P38a rims which would be nice to use as they match the D2, but they're all 16x8 and the narrowest tyre I have is 285/75 which may be overkill for a trailer. I've also got 6x Hilux 6 stud splitties with 205R16's which are as cheap as chips. I bought them for my old Landy IIa, but they dont fit Landcruiser 60 axles for some strange reason, locking onto a steering arm! I think typing this just has made my decision actually. I'll fit 6 stud. Doing this will solve 2 problems for me. One is the current 13" rim tyres have a load rating of about 500kg each, and in practise I would put 1000kg into it, so am after a tyre that will have a margin of safety rather than being on the edge and potentially giving problems. The other issue it fixes for me, is that despite being a SOA setup, it is still too low for the D2 and needs more ride height to sit level. I think the Toy splitties are roughly a 28 or 29, so that should do the trick with a new set of guards. Hmmm, sounds like a trailer refurbishment is coming up!

Thanks for this folks.

The hubs are fine, dont touch the ching lee bearings, use one Timken or SKB, most of those hubs are based on the early holden hubs, you can get Ford Pattern or Holden just in case your pedantic, I see many trailers on the side of the road with a wheel gone, either bad bearings or the 5o year old wrecking yard tyres

I tend to think that real taper roller bearings are made by Timken and no one else, although the Japanese stuff used in Nissan's, etc are excellent.

Grease type is very important in trailer bearings, as the buggers sit for long periods unused, and usually the seals are sub standard so let moisture in.
I became sick and tired of replacing bearings in the horse float (and it didn't help that it used to drive through a river semi-regularly) as it could sit for several months at a time, then be used every week or so, and even my exxy synth race car bearing grease wasn't keeping them alive.
I finally wised up and bought some Calcium Sulphonate base marine bearing grease.

Problem solved.

It resists water, moisture and corrosion far, far better than lithium, lithium complex, any of the clays or aluminium based greases.

Why not do what im doing and make the axle up from heavy wall sq tube with flanges on each end to take rangie stub axles and use rangie hubs and discs with rear rangie calipers and override hydraulic breaks that way you can run the same size wheels on the trailer well thats my plan anyways :D:D:D

That sounds pretty cool Lokka and would be an excellent mod for those with the large PCD rover wheels. As I understand it though, the D2 rim PCD matches the Commodore hub with M14 studs or whatever the classic studs run if I want to match the rims to the Disco2, but the rims are all 8" wide which is a bit much for the trailer. With the Hilux rims I can probably just do a Landcruiser hub swap onto the same axle???? I think.

Yep if you want to use yota rims it would work the same just use yota hubs and stubs ...

My plan is to use 75sq tube x 5mm wall fab flanges to take the rover stubs and weld them to the ends of the sq tube and also weld gussets in for strength then weld on brackets to take rover rear calipers and use rear rangie discs plum the callipers to an over ride brake set up and your away ...

Ive got a 14ft alloy tray here ATM which came off the old dyna truck in the backyard were going to use it and the old dyna chasis to make up a dual axle trailer with full cage so my old man can cart his livestock on it and it will be using the same axle set up and over ride breaks ....

Only drama with using the GMH hubs your GVM will be less as the 14mm studs arnt rated to take as much load hence why most large trailers run a ford hub as they have bigger studs and why i want to use the rangie hubs as there studs are bigger again :D:D:D
