G'day All

I have a 2006 TD5 Defender - and a mechanic who is pushing me to let him 'play/tweak' the computer for more power etc.

My questions are:
1. He says it won't affect fuel economy driving normally - only uses more if l drive hard. True?
2. Impact on drive lines, axles and diffs? Or is will this all stand up to it? Only looking at owning the vehicle another couple of years anyway.
3. Warrenty - what do LR think of these aftermarket 'changes' to their software setups? Mechanic said -he'd change it back when it went in then back again when l got it back (free of charge).

He reckons this will be much better of rtowing duties and general touring etc? Worth about $400-500 ....???

Send a PM to TombRaider (Mike) and ask him all these questions.

He has got a lot of posts on these topics so a search will turn them up for you.

Basically, he does chip upgrades for around $500 (I think....).

Cheers

My fuel economy actually improved after chipping. I'm reasonable sure that a 2006 defender has a flash upgradable ECU and that LR will not generally know that your ECU has been upgraded unless they specifically check. If you do have any warranty issues that "could" be attributable to the ECU, they will not view your flashed ECU postively.

Other than that, no one seems to have had any long term negatives resulting from ECU upgrades (not that I am aware of anyway)

1. It wont effect economy if you dont use the extra power, Turbo diesels only burn the fuel they need to to make the power you want it to make.

2. yes no maybe..... IMHO theres about 30% in reserve on the driveline before you start seriously effecting its longevity providing you dont drive it like a bogan on the roads or like a yank off road.

3. That I'd be a little sus of but its good in theory.
