View Full Version : air spring question

I have posted this question in another thread but thought I would start a fresh.
I am thinking of fitting some air assist in the rear as the disco bottoms out harshly when loaded up. Seems preferable to higher rated springs as i use the thing unloaded as well.
Will fitting air bags (air bags inside coils) reduce rear wheel articulation???
Also, I have the G-Force hydro swaybars on the disco, will air bags upset this??? (my guess is no).
I currently run standard length springs (i think) with a 2" body lift, will the same polyair/firestone airbags work in longer springs if i should decide to do a 2" spring lift????

oh....thanks in advance for any advice.

your assumptions are pretty much all on the ball and no it wont upset the articulation other than make it harder for the axle to be compressed up into the chassis (which is why your fitting them in the first place)

but dont ever run the springs totally deflated always maintian a couple of psi in them.

be carefull about how you route the airlines to pressuriese them if you dont just rely on the nipple poking up through the tower mount.

dont forget to clean them out occasionally, let all the air out of them and get in there with the hose and soapy water then rinse it all thoroughly this gets rid of any of the abrasives that will rub through on the spring propper and extends the life of the bag, you might also catch any potential damage before it gets all the way through.

Im fairly sure that the longer airbag will work with shorter springs but not the other way around. Ask the supplier they'll have the numbers to help you out there.

You can also fit a tap in the line, when off road open the tap and let air transfer from one bag to the other assisting articulation, when on road position the car flat & level and close the tap.
