anyone know what the phillips head-type screw is that holds the rotors on?
and the best/quickest/non-workshop way to undo it?

I used an impact driver from Supercheap. Come off quite easily.

will this butcher the slots?

No, mine were fine. Just keep a firm hold of the impact driver before hitting it with a hammer. The bit should not slip out of the slots.

Impact screw driver is the go. It also helps to use a large screw driver to slightly tighten the screws first to free the thread. A squirt of penetrene a week before you want to pull it apart also helps.

I've always just used a large screw driver and it's been fine. I always leave them in, but when the wheel is on they become redundant anyway.

now for a nice cold shower--
and the test drive!
oh,, and the rotors were $80ea
and Mintex pads at $98.
[and a impact screwdriver @ $14 and a 19mm 1/2 drive socket @$5 ;)]
must remember to measure the old ones--
I reckon they've done two sets of pads,,
