hi guys
since having vista i'm having trouble shutting it down......
well not really having trouble but it sometimes takes at least 2 goes to shut it down
for example the other night i shut it down, and yes i defeinatly clicked to shut it down and not put in to power saving mode which i did alot when i first got it:mad: as its the same button as shut down in xp:D
and the computer shut off just like it was shutting down then all of a sudden back to life it came its done this to me a few times now, as at first i thought it was just me
its more of an annoyance than anything else but is there a setting i can change or something along those lines or is it something i shouldbe concerned about?
has it ever happened to anyone else?
thanks

Hi db,
Bit more information:
Have you kept Vista up to date with patches?
Is this a Desktop or Laptop?
Is it a brand name one or a generic (made up) PC?
Did you install Vista over the top of XP or did the PC come with Vista?

OK, I would start by looking at the power options in the Vista Control panel. Go to the advanced settings option. This may not be available on a desktop, but I've read where the power options can still be configured. Check the settings.
Next check what version of BIOS the motherboard is running. This may come up in the initial Boot screen or you may have to press a function key to enter the BIOS setup. Check the manufacturer's web site for the latest BIOS version. Do the same with Video card, check for updated drivers.
Wireless KB shouldn't be an issue.

It's quite OK to shut PC's down now using the CASE power button.
At one time ie pre-2000 they would just turn off, (not good).
Now the off button is a "Soft" off so it will shut down properly.
I do it all the time.
BTW DO NOT hold the power button in while turning off, just press it and let go.

In XP,, sometimes this was the only way of getting it to shut down--:p
I quite like Vista,,
but its more an attitude change for me,, I was really anal with xp about changing it around so it did things and put things how and where I wanted,,
now I just let vista worry about it,,,,
and use a lot of shortcuts:D

Hmmm I wondered why I had to have a 2Gb o/head :o of memory for my ASUS laptop with XP Home Premium. I'm sorly tempted to go back to XP or dare I say it, partition the drive and then put a copy of LINUX on it. :wasntme:

that's interesting about upgrading to XP from Vista because I just got a Sony Vaio and on their UK site and possibly Oz. site now you can "downgrade" from vista to XP for free. I believe people were ceasing to buy some products due to the O.S. on it. Microsoft is also bring out a new service pack 3 which certainly says something about Vista and businesses are not changing to Vista as they are concerned about low productivity which some businesses have experienced.
I've had the said problem about shutting down with Vista so I did the only thing possible...take off vista and chuck XP back on it.
It is okay to turn off computer with external button as it shuts down correctly and means you can do it as your walking out the door. I know it wasn't with win 95, 3.1 and 98 but XP is fine to do so however I think Vista just puts it in to sleep and I could not easily find a way of changing this.

vista has the same shutdown bug microsoft have had since windows 98
no more no less... it is a part of the microsoft way of life.
vista is very nice on equipment that directly supports it..
upgrading an old machine to vista is not a good thing unless you are into self hurt...
i would add that IMHO, p35 and p38 chipset motherboards NEED to have the latest bios updates fitted as they are released by the manufacturers as they do have a marked affect on speed and featureset esp if you have gigabyte, asus or foxconn motherboards.
