factory long range tank....

Was stripping down the wreck (a civy '63 SWB ) a bit more today....

With the floor off I thought I'd take a gander at the drivers side fuel tank support that I needed for one of the ex-mil SWB rebuilds. Looking down I thought hmmmm.... that's different.... it's not there....

As it turns out, the wreck was fitted with a factory long range tank with stone guard....

Were they a very common option ?

It'll probably end up in my son's S3 ute.

Not clear what you mean by a long range tank, but if referring to the larger RH side tank extending under the floor, these were uncommon, at least in Australia, until Series 3, and even then, more usual with the 109. Rather surprising, since a major shortcoming of Landrovers (and many other cars) in the fifties, sixties and seventies, was inadequate range. In the sixties, for example, my 109 diesel had a range of perhaps 240 miles, certainly better than the then current UK Holden that would be lucky to do 200, but then I got a Citroen, which would easily 400 miles. This in the days when there was only one all night petrol station between Brisbane and Sydney, for example. Anyone doing long distance driving expected to have to carry a couple of jerricans of petrol.

yeah that's the one John. It looks like a standard with the normal displacement under the seat, but is also deeper and extends under the floor. At a guess I'd say an extra 20 to 25 lt of capacity. All fittings and metal work look like a normal LR build.

When I take it off I'll see if the standard support bracket has been removed or not...just to see if it's original fitment...

I wonder if these were ever fitted to Army S2A SWB...... Phoenix / UncleHo ???

Yes, I've never seen one on a S2a, but they are common on S3s, perhaps even standard (at least for Australia) by late production.

Not sure if this helps any but we have a wreck late model series 2a 109 that had the long rage fuel tank (16 gallon I think ) . Looked like it had been there for a lot of years .

The 16 gallon tank (long range tank) was an optional extra/accessory for Civilian and Govt vehicles, but were not fitted to the Military 2/2a vehicles, they were, Ser 2 early, 1 R/H 10 gallon tank, and were later modified (BOD)? to twin 10 gallon w/dipstick, ALL Ser.2a's had 2 x 10 gallon with dipstick, the Series 3's had one 16 gallon tank.

You will find that a lot of vehicles had the 16 gallon fitted on the Left hand side, if the vehicle was ordered new with the 16 gallon then it would be on the Right, as the 10 gallon support bracket was left off in production/assembly:) so if your son's Ute could have it fitted as a Left Hand tank, as there wouldn't be the 10 support outrigger;)

G'day All, I have a few pix of a Series 2 109 FFW that was converted by the RAEME to a Wksp vehicle, it is fitted with 2 x 16 gallon tanks complete with dip sticks, not sure whether the dip stick was modified from a 10 gallon tank or not, as I was only looking at it, the vehicle had been spld and was being loaded for transport at the time, the vehicle was painted in cam colours, I do have pix showing the tanks but that is all cheers Dennis:wasntme:
PS It is the only one I have seen in the Series 2/2A with 16 gallon tanks.

I have also seen a 2A workshop with two 16 gallon tanks, but they were fitted as a unit mod quite late in its military life.
