Mine was mounted under the bonnet in my '87 RR. The bracket lifted it above something but I can't remember what (John E Davis Motorworks installed it for the previous owner)

Same place on my disco, the cables were the right length and i had a bracket lying around that was made for the job so it made the location easy.

Better if the cables are kept short. Less power loses.

In the Uk we used to out them behind the drivers side head light. Room behind there and out of way of water even when wading as the bow wave still keeps that area dry
And have the remote in the cab and by the winch

Under the passenger's seat is the battery. Not enough room there in mine... and it fills up with water - sometimes:angel: - so it would still drown. I was going to move mine up under the guard as others have suggested.

You could also go the 'extra mile' and mount it all inside a watertight plastic box.

FWIW - The engine bay is where they mount the control boxes on the Camels.

when you guys say in the guard. Is this on a Disco ? Plus I think it needs to be somewhere you can get to it easly, incase you need to swop wires around.
I have it on the left guard under the bonnet, on my Zook. heaps of room. Now theres something I thought I never say about a Zook.

On the Discos, they were mounted on top of the wheel arch (or there abouts IIRC). If you do it properly, first time and use decent solenoids, you'll probably never have to touch the box again (the box on my 110 was last opened 6 yrs ago)!

If you stick them in a waterproof box, get the type with a twist-lock screws in lid so you can access the inside if need be.
