View Full Version : Cruise Control Behaviour

G'day all!
Has anyone else found their cruise control to be somewhat aggressive? On my TDV6 SE, if, say I had the cruise set to 100kph and I press the resume button from around 40/50kph, the vehicle will accelerate rapidly towards the target speed and go over it by 5 or 10kph. It will then quickly slow to the proper speed and stay there. If you resume cruise closer to the target speed, such as from 70kph, then there isn't a problem. I've had the car at the dealer who appreciates the problem and says that they tried another D3 and discovered it did the same thing. LR aren't aware of the problem and there are no TSBs, so the dealer is treating the issue as acceptable for the vehicle, although they did suggest I could contact LR customers services.
My old XR6T Falcon had cruise and it never behaved this way, nor did my old Disco V8i SE. The thing that is on my mind is that the aggressive behaviour of the D3's cruise could result in a speeding fine!

My 03 Range Rover did the same thing but they must have made some alterations to the way new RR works because it is much less aggressive but the new RR will not stay on the speed selected.
Set the speed while cruising at 100km and the speed creeps up to 105km
It’s always a 5km and I’ve seen the same issue raised on an RR site.
So they seem to have swapped one problem for another.

Yeah, mine does that. As such I don't resume until I'm close to the cruise speed. Say when I reach 90 for a cruise of 105.

Yes, mine responds quickly too, but I don't see it as a problem. (This may be because it's a manual, and every time you change gears, the cruise control deselects & I have to reselect it.)

I've noticed the same esp. when it changes down(auto) for a crest or hill and when it comes over the top it can pick up speed like you say, up to 10kph. I believe the new Mercers also use the traction control to maintain the correct speed, LR have yet to use that idea. I think it has to do with being an auto box. Never had the problem to that extent on the manual D2:)

I have always presumed the turbo is still boosting when it gets to the speed defined, and therefore takes a while to figure things out. I had this in my Galant VR4, so not a biggie for me. But yes, unneccesarily eager to get up to speed, but I can live with it no dramaz.
Chances of being pinged for the couple of seconds one is over is very unlikely, but yes, possible.

The XR6T I had was an automatic, and when resuming the cruise control, accelerated gently and always hit the target speed spot on.
Like Forest says, I can live with it.

I find that the cruise control on the V8 works a treat. My suspicion is the (ex) Ford-designed D3 has optimised cruise control, etc for the US market, which is mostly V8's. Leaving it in 6th doesn't help smoothness - anything resembling a hill and the beast just drops off the torque curve. Of course before adding an auxilliary fuel tank, cruise control wasn't much value as by the time I was up to 110 km/hr it was time to slow for more fuel.

Arr your not driving it right, Im getting 13.4/100kms atm :D, though am interested in knowing more about the aux tank, who/where/$$ as eventually will get one for mine,

I get the same fuel consumption as you're showing if driven at 100-105 kmh. Put on a rooftop tent, 2 tonnes of trailer and drive at 110 then it really sucks down. While I'm Perth based, I originally used my D3 on gas pipeline work in Victoria, so took the opportunity to have the Long Range Automotive factory install a tank. It's worked a treat, allowing for 1200 km trecks. I don't recall the cost but it's around the cost of filling both tanks 3 times :o

Just a wee bit back towards the topic, my dad's '99 disco 2 has a very aggresive cruise too, on resume it basically accelerates at full throttle and then shoots over, then returns to the set speed. My '04 defender does exactly the same. Maybe it's a british thing!
I know the speed limit in the UK on most of the motorways is 70MPH, I'd be guessing that's what it's optimised for?

Yep, mine does that, perfectly normal behavior! :) Just watch it doesn't get you a ticket! :D:D

I've recently started a new job and the route to work is a long country road (Hooray for me, no more SE Fwy:D) sign posted at 70kmh which the coppers just love to set speed cameras on. So I use the cruise. On the flat its fine, but the slightest hill or dip and it's all over the place through over-aggressive gear changing.
At highway speeds I find the cruise great.

Mine's fine once set - rock solid, stays at the set speed.
It's the 'resume' function that gets a bit carried away with itself and generally sees you speeding momentarily. This is normal though, there's loads of stuff about it on DISCO3.CO.UK - Dedicated to Discovery 3 and LR3 Owners and Enthusiasts (http://www.disco3.co.uk)

Mine is no where near as agressive as the old TD5. The TDV6 does need more torque to hold a more constant cruise speed. I also have a little VW TDI (1600 kgs and 320 nm torque) and it is great.

Dealer told Me of this, whilst showing Me the rules of play, when I took delivery.
He said to accelerate up to 75% of the required/ set speed, with the foot, then let the cruise take over gently via the resume set speed function. He said to do it from much lower percentages would result in aggressive acceleration.

I have heard of this problem on the Pajero. In fact it was so bad that it caused an accident in wet weather.

I have fond that my cruise control will be anything from 5kmh fast to 5kmh slow when on the open Rd going up and down hills, I have checked this on the GPS so always set just below the speed limit by about 2kmh. Not to bad in Qld as you have about 5% margin but not so down Vic and NSW.
