My 97 disco is hard to disengauge the centre diff lock, lever takes a little effot to engauge but works easily once in.To take out is extremly hard and took quite a few attemps, any ideas. The gearbox was removed to fix rear main last week, cdl was not hard to operate before this.

Hi, i also had my transfer gearbox in and out recently (before which i never had a problem with my CDL) and last weekend while camping I could not take it out of CDL. However my problem was a bit different to yours, the stick would move to the non CDL side but still not dis-engage.
I imagine it was the actuator thing. I couldn't work out where or what it was so just removed the front tail shaft before hitting bituman.
Its being fixed at AMV on monday.
I'll post the outcome for you, how was yours fixed???
Thanks

It could be 'wound up' a little.
Try putting in Diff Lock and reversing about 300 m - then try it again.

Funny enough I had a similar issue to mns after my clutch was done just recently.
The difflock light stayed on for some time after I disengaged it. It went out after about 15 mniutes, after going around a few bends on the sealed road.
Never had that happen before.
If I find the difflock lever is hard to move, I do it while rolling forward ever so slightly - usually goes in then.

thanks ladas, i did give that a go - no good:(.
it was playing up all weekend. even when actually engaging it, it would take about 30mins of driving before the light came on so i left it locked in CDL all weekend while offroad.
Then driving out, i drove on a dirt winding road for about 50 k/ms thinking that will fix it... no good. Reversed for about 1k/m... no good:(
so swore a lot removing the front tail shaft before the bituman near poreapunkah... the nuts are so hard to get off... pokey for room. is there a special tool?

yep its called a specially ground down 14mm ring open end spanner and a 1/4 inch drive socket set. (9/16th for series be safe get both as sometimes a combination or either will turn up when you dont expect them to)
once youve done a few you work out where the sweet spot it and once youve cracked the nuts you use the 14mm (9/16th) socket and ratchet on a 4 inch extension bar on the appropriate position to get a good swing at it.
