Metallic clunk when going into reverse

I watched underneath as No1 piccinini wiggled the controls :eek:

the front prop shaft does a fair bit of rotation.... front diff clearance? shaft splines?

well, the rear shaft didn't move at all. Possibly because the hand brake was still on :blush:

the clunk is very definitely in the front... I had my hand on the T-case as it clunked, didn't seem to be from there

Possibly front unis?
If you can remove the front tail shaft and see if the noise is gone

Just went and had another play with the hand brake off, same symptoms.

I felt for clearance in the unis under load, nothing.

it might just be stack up clearance of drive shaft splines and CVs

The noise is a bit rev dependant.

At 700rpm there's not much to speak of.

It is most noticeable if I select reverse just after starting and the engine hasn't settled to idle yet.

yeh my'n clunks to when going into rev

i have changed my rear uni's i'm still yet to do my front uni's i will let you know if it has improved

sounds like takeup to me but you might find its also worth checking the aframe ball joint.

if you try hard enough you can make almost any rover clunk when you got from first to reverse....

try lifting the front axles and seeing how much rotation you get on the front propshaft before the wheels start to turn. once youve got that sussed gently turn the wheels to make the opposite wheel spin the other way while watching the propshaft.

the propshaft should move a little and both wheels should spin freely. try it with the wheels turned left and right and it also lets you check your CV joints while your at it.

these checks arent definitive but should give you a rough indication if its the front end and what part it might be.

Just for your own feel good thing.
Get underneath her with a pair of 9\16th spanners, and check your "uni-joint" flange bolts. Check everything else too.

I've got my old girl ready for the engineering work now.
How she never simply fell apart I don't know. :(
Not many bolts were more than pinched up at best, some had loosened to barely finger tight.:o She clunked.:D Including both diff pinion flanges.:eek:

Just check them out as well. Just to be sure.
