View Full Version : Lucas 3TXB Key Fob Programming

Hi Folks,
I know it's been looked at before, but there doesn't seem to be any definitive answers.
I have a 97 ES Discovery Tdi that has the 2 button Lucas 3TXB key fob.
When purchased (2nd hand recently), the Disco only came with one fob which works fine.
I purchased a brand new Disco in 1997 and sold it in 2001, but for some reason I still have the spare 3TXB key fob from that vehicle.
Question....
Can this spare fob be programmed as a second unit for my current Disco?
If so... how is it done?
My local LR dealer tells me that it can't be done and that I need to buy another control unit with the two new corresponding fobs. He couldn't tell me how much this would cost (probably because I wasn't sitting down at the time!!)
There seems to be a lot of conflicting information including a programming sequence and something about a learning mode using a serial cable.
Can we clear this up once and for all????
regards
M.

At the risk of being accused of only providing more half answers.
I've watched my servicer do it after the alarm/remote locking control unit was replaced in my vehicle.
What I can tell you is that they don't re-program the fobs themselves. The fobs ae fixed in whatever frequency and rolling code they send out.
What happens is that the Testbook is connected to the car via the connector under the steering wheel - I believe they then use this to accesses the alarm ECU and put it into "learning" mode.
They then press the buttons on the key fob, which sends out the coded radio signal, and the ECU picks it up and synchs to that. I recall I needed to take in both my main and spare key fob so they could be synched to the new ECU.
However i'm not sure if the fobs need to be "matched" pairs. I guess a call to any large aftermarket LR servicer who do this ( like Ritters, Rang Rov, LRA in Melb or Coopers in Sydney ) would answer that. Ask for their Testbook whizz. Someone on here's bound to know too.
So that doesn't help answer your exact question, but it does indicate that while the fobs might need to be matched pairs, the fob and ECU certainly don't need to be. Sorry can't help more.

According to RAVE Electronic troubleshooting guide, the operation necessary to synch fobs is exactly as WayneP described - RAVE simply describes the synch operation for additional fobs, up to a maximum of four.
I'd check to see that the spare fob you have is the same freq (or part number) as the current one - there should be a LR part number on the inside of the fob, and as long as you don't remove the batteries it should be fine.
Then find another dealer - tell him you've changed the batteries and require two fobs to be reprogrammed.

Any LR dealer or decent landrover shop can programme the systems to work. They need the fob and the car - not sure if the fob is programmed or the ECU is programmed but if the deaqler has the "gear" it can be programmed. There may be an issue with imported fobs but if the one is from your old Aust delievered car - it can be done but stealers charge and arm and a leg.

The Alarm ECU on the 07 Disco should hold the fob codes. Whilst not the same as the D2's, it's a similar setup, and they should be able to program the new fob. Each fob transmits a code that the ECU can receive, this can then be read and entered into one of the key memory positions in the ECU. You'll need someone with dealer/Testbook or Rovacom (licenced for the Lucas 10AS module)

If you search on the web there is a way for you to access the "learning mode" to re-programme the ECU to accept the codes from your new key fobs. But I can't get it working! The ECU doesn't want to enter "learning mode"...anyone else have the same problem?

My under standing is that the car and new fob needs to go to a dealer or a specialist with the ECU programming computer so that the fobs can be synchronised with the ECU - I believe the ECU is programmed to read the Foc code. I don;t believe it can be done at home.
What you may have read is how to link the fob to the car when the fob battery has gone flat or it has been replaced. The fob must have already been programmed to the ECU. To link the fob when the battery has been changed the routine is to push each button on the fob one after the other in quick succession for up to 5 cycles then the ECU will accept the code from the fob. This will not work if the Fob has not already been coded to the car.

different vehicle i know... but same alarm system..
the deefer (td5) i have just bought 2 fobs for as it had none, the nanocom hooked into the alarm system no problem and learned the fobs. you dont program the fobs you just tell the alarm module to learn the signals coming in. now im wondering if there is any way of interfacing the nanocom with the as10 alarm on the disco 1? i doubt it... but at least you know the as10 can be programmed...

I have a 99MY Defender Extreme and it has an alarm unit behind the dash plus an alarm antenna under the front hood lining. However it did not come with any fobs.
Can you tell me where you got your fobs and what they cost?
Thanks, Howard
