Chassis cracks

Has anyone had experience of chassis cracks at the front bump stop mounting on a 110. Springs are rated 280pounds/inch (50N/mm) and shockies are monroe direct action

Mine has been cracked and welded before I bought it. The crack goes right around the other side and half way up again, so 3/4 of the way through the chassis rail. Must have been an interesting drive for someone, mind you, it was in commercial use for around 10 years. It still had the original springs/shocks, well land rover ones anyway.

The other rail is just starting to go, but hasn't gotten any worse in the time I have owned it, must remember to get out the welder soon.......

Both are in the same place, right at the rear of the front spring tower mount.............

A mates RR cracked the mounts after a 350 chev was droped in and heavier suspension put on to take the weight. Pat

another cause of cracking is if the suspension is allowing the vehicle to bottom out onto the bumpstops......

this will put a lot of strain on the chassis......as there is no more bump absorption once all the suspension has been compressed to this point......

Not sure about 110s but I have seen Series 3 LWB vehicles break the chassis off both sides behind the front spring hangers.
So it is quite possible but pretty uncommon.

Holy Shiiiiiiiiiiit that is some pretty serious cracks!
I've done a fare few repairs to landrover chassis over the years an I have never seen nothin like that.
You need low hydrogen electrodes if stick welding. Or even better if you have acess to a pulse mig, tricky bit is cleaning the crack out of impurities before welding.

I've welded a few of the army chassis up but they had nothing on those cracks Jimbo, my hat goes off to you and my heart goes to the poor landy:wacko:

Be careful taking on welding of chassis as they are supposed to have an engineers report on the weld and your car can be put off the road if you can not produce one. Here in WA anyway. Looked in to having and Ambo chassis welded. Not expensive or difficult, just some smart copper can discover it.
Chassis section are different I believe.

Sorry got no photos The Crack is about 35mm long and starts under the bumpstpo mount an goes round the weld and up the chassis. I suspect that it is the shocks and spring as there is damage to the bumpstop.

280lb/in isn't huge. OE is 225lb/in.
most likely cause is 'getting some air' and bottoming out.
The loads go from manageable as the spring/dampers compress to almost infinity as the bump stop has used all its compression up.
Something has to give.

This is the reason off road racers use huge amounts of bump travel and hydraulic/pneumatic bump stops.
