Hi everyone, just wondering about a rear locker. I know Maxi drive is out of the picture, so I'm wondering about ARB or Mcnamara. You ring them and they say theirs is the best. So I thought I might get some opinions from the experts. Cheers Cinders

I dont have 1 yet but I will one day get an ARB air locker for a few reasons:
a.They are easy to get
b.They are easy to get parts for (if you ever need any)
c.They are really, really reliable and strong
others may think differently but thats my take on it :D

I think you will find mcnamarra fixes ARB lockers for ARB , Ive been there and seen many a ARB diff lock being repaired
Ive dealt with mcnamarra a few times he is not a man of many words nor has he any sales expertise ,But his lockers and axles would be on a par with Maxi
Arb are ok but dont do heavy duty axles and if your going a locker it is wise to upgrade axles
A mate of mine had ARB lockers fitted and had them supply and fit mcnamarra axles at the same time

Suprisingly I am going to agree with MCRover:p
I have ARB's front and rear and I have never had a single issue in the 3 years and 60k km they have been fitted.
Fantastic product.

only issue of the lockers is if you dont play nice with the loud pedal on the standard axles (which isnt too aplicable if you have the sals rear end)

I would argue that the JacMac lockers are the best locker on the market.
I would also argue that dealing with Jeff at JacMac completely does my head in and he is intolerable.
ARB work very well, but are not designed as well in terms of durability, although I would expect compressor design has improved but I'm not convinced that their solinoid electrical connections have.
If TJM were selling the Prolocker for Rovers (which is a JacMac locker) then thats what I would get. Seeming as they don't, I would (and have) bought ARB lockers.
I'm not sure what vehicle you drive, but I would also make sure it runs 24 spline axles, and if it doesn't I would convert it. I would also run HD 24 spline axles from Maxidrive or JacMac.

you could also get the internals from Ascrofts who are in all honesty probably teh best supplier for Land Rovers

G'day Hymie, here is a link to JacMac's (Jack McNamara differentials) website.
Jack McNamara - Differential Specialists (http://www.mcnamaradiffs.com.au/)
I believe they only do air lockers now, and not vacuum.

Geoff mcnamara is the son that has taken over the buisness and the one you will deal with , he is Mr personality++++++;)

I had a stripped crownwheel using a McNamara diff lock back in "78. I have to say I gave Jeff a pretty hard time and looking back on it I aint too proud of that performance.
To his credit, he took it reasonably well and a lesser person would have either snotted me or thrown me out.
He reasoned with me and I settled down. He was pretty good with a replacement and I respect him for those two reasons.
Maybe he is getting grumpy as he gets older, but I would buy any of his products if I needed them.

Probably a few more people giving him a hard time like you did DeeJay and having to talk to Chris..........may have driven him over the edge lol :D
I dont think there is anything wrong with McNamara stuff and it is probably better quality than ARB but he has 1 work shop and from what I hear has very little back up around the place but in saying that it also seems damn near impossible to break one of his lockers.
And seems I have neither and havnt brken either of them then my opinion isnt worth as much as one of these blokes that has had the experience with them.
It was just my thoughts thats all.

I've run ARB in my 94 3.9V8 disco for about six or seven years. Never had any problems with them at all, they have had a lot of use over the years some of it hard but I havent used it in competition - just by my self so if I break any thing I walk, therefore I am reasonably careful about it. Only broke one front drivers CV (actually exploded is closer) but that was in swampy ground at full noise when it finally got traction so it was my own fault.
