View Full Version : Work on the 'ol ute tomorrow

olmate
18th January 2008, 07:58 PM
Well the clutch is not original but I have a complete system to go into the ol ute tomorrow. Am so glad that the motor is out and on a stand at the moment. Will probably finish off the paint in the engine bay as well.

I want to be able to put the motor back in in a couple of weeks.:D

I have attached a coule of before and after shots. Bit bright now but its keeping me occupied until I find one in original knick.

I am thinking about bronze green for this one as well. But I hadn't planned on painting her - just a bit of a polish. It seems that those people around me are changing my mind. :o

Hey Troy that flash red Red motor is gonna make that old girl really belt along, wanna clean up my old Grey 6 for me, only has about 40 years of caked oil and crud you cant shift with a scraper, gonna be a petrol degrease job. Shes going great mate keep it up.

olmate
18th January 2008, 09:46 PM
Will gladly clean up your grey motor for you... but it may come back a shade of red and with engine mounts in the wrong spot... :D

No need to remove all that build up crud if its stopping other leaks on a workhorse. Mines just looking pretty as I am a bit bored and had to have somethin gto do prior to going back to work.

graceysdad
18th January 2008, 09:53 PM
But I cant paint over that old junk with the Grey enamel !, you are right if I clean it off and run it it will spew oil from everywhere, but for the sake off it looking clean and tidy think we can change the sideplate gasket and valve cover and avoid the leaks, still think you will burn me off in a race to 20mph!

Hey Troy . Is there any parts you need for the holden engine at all ? i have plenty of bits floating around the shed ;)

olmate
18th January 2008, 10:00 PM
A nice clean and freshly painted grey motor would look great. New gaskets on the side plates etc would sort out most oil leaks as well.

Hey Troy . Is there any parts you need for the holden engine at all ? i have plenty of bits floating around the shed ;)

I am pretty right at the moment just looking for the dizzy and coil off a VC Commodore (elec type). Could possibly do with spares such as fuel pump, water pump etc if you wanted to get rid of stuff. The alternator will also be the next thing as she will probably only go for a bit (have ignored it to date).

Let me know what you want to get rid of and we can work something out.

Anyway - I'm off as I need sleep. Catch you later. Troy

19th January 2008, 03:56 PM
The old red motor is looking great, as for painting the body to be totaly honest I think the spit & polish would look great as it looks to me that it has the original paint that is so hard to find on old Landys, I wish my 80 inch was still wearing its original paint. :D

olmate
19th January 2008, 06:19 PM
I love the Bronze Green and had been thinking that, as the ute wasn't original, I should just as well paint her another colour. However saying that, the grey is in good knick and after a bit of a polish up today; she looked quite promising. :D

olmate
19th January 2008, 06:28 PM
Well today didn't see the clutch bits go into the ol-ute. As olmate needed a replacement alternator and that took the time from me...:o... all good now.

So I finished up the wiring under the bonnet and connected the second tank to the ol-ute instead. Will finish the painting under the bonnet tomorrow and then get into the clutch bits. Still looking good to have her motor back in a couple of weeks.. ;) .. and I cant wait to have her running :D

olmate
23rd January 2008, 09:32 PM
Feel like its going very well. The motor can go in next week (as long as I get the clutch line and cylinders in on the weekend) then its the brake reservoir and she's a going concern. :D

I have bows coming for the back (soonish) and fingers crossed the wife will pick up that I want some new seats for my birthday. And then - its just cleaning up the outside .... and yes - I am going to clean up the original paintwork ;) she'll be a little beauty:)

So what do you reckon? the engine bay is going to be pretty flash.

olmate
27th January 2008, 01:13 PM
I had to do it - changed the engine mounts. Sometimes even I reckon that I am a lazy bloke. Anyway, she's running now and sounds sweet. Will need a new exhaust soon but its good enough for the moment.

Will sort the brake reservoir out this week, get a longer flex pipe for the clutch slave cylinder and then i'll be right to chuck a few 'blockies'. :D

What do they say - '"no ute... no circle work". Well maybe not with this one but she is keeping me happy. ;)

graceysdad
27th January 2008, 10:30 PM
What colour is the engine bay Troy looks to be black yeah?, you inspired me to think about tackling my engine, I only said think!, I have degreased it 3 times now and slowly the motor is starting to appear, the inside of the engine bay is grey but i am going to go chassis black everywhere I think. Your coming along great guns.

olmate
28th January 2008, 03:19 PM
Keep going fella - that engine will appear soon.

As for my next little project, I think I 'may' have been successful getting these bows re-made and then it could be time for that canopy I have been promising myself :D. See how we go. I am still waiting to confirm if I have been lucky enough with replacement bows.

The paint work seems to be fine. Gave it a light rub yesterday and it looks good enough for the ute. There will just be the need to tidy up the interior paintwork and then... some seats ;)

:D I am over the moon now.... The bloke that I bought the olute from has rang and is sending me the diary that his mate had kept of the car since new; detailing his money spent and repairs / work done as required since its purchase in 1955. Considering that the bloke owned it until he passed in 2001, this diary will be something special.

The car was left in a will to the fella I bought it off as he was a very good mate of the original owner. Travelling in it on many hunting / fishing trips in Vic / NSW. ;)

I have sorted my bows for the ute and I am onto a canopy. I do need to find an indicator unit for the steering column and five 'used' tyres for the ol-ute. If anyone could help it would be appreciated. I do have some bits from other series Landy's that I could swap if people are interested (head, rocker gear, diff, prop shafts etc)

Will see how I go. Shall also put an add in the market section.

Wayne,

Are you familiar with many Series 1's having the Della type on them? I have only seen ceremonial vehicles with these fitted. However have found that for the 1955 vehicles it may have been common for both types (Pork Pie and Della); seems these ones may be easier to get hold of.

Had only just sent this reply when I got a message from a supplier in England. He has originals in boxes still (can imagine the price...). Will let you know more when I find out.

Troy, I have seen early ones with either the "D" lights or Pork Pie types, but not Della. There was a bloke at Toowoomba who had brand new "D" lights for $120 each:o Beautiful quality though, as they were brass with glass lenses.

Hi there

Sorry for the late response - at work and as usual it turns to s--t.

I have seen both types of light on these series ones (my fire tender has pork pies's) and I am not to sure of the history behind it. Diana might be the best person to ask - here knowledge amazes me......

As for the "d" lights I have managed to manufacture them my self - and it would only take a good rivet counter to spot the differences.

Still searching for seals and would happily take anyones advice. I have been searching for things that may 'just come close' but without luck.
I need:

1. the door seals - easily enough to compromise thru Rare Spares here in Wodonga
2. Seal under windscreen to bulkhead - I am stumped....
3. Seal above windscreen to roof - yep ... stumped again (may just cut my own from some sheet rubber).. dunno

On a good note - the paint in the cab is drying now and I should be able to get into the thing again this week after work. I do need help locating the sliding windows for the two front doors (unless I just get some glass cut here ans say thats close enough...) ;)

Did include a photo of the cab at the moment. :)

Slowly does it mate, I have stepped up my pace, seems now every spare 10 mins I get I go out and try and dop something even if it is just some scraping of mud and crap , after the seat box came out she was fairly yucky under there,
Now a question I found a big heavy broken earth wire from the trans brake mech to the chassis, why earth it there?
Olute is cruising along in a big way, like your canopy!

olmate
10th March 2008, 08:11 PM
Hey mate. I have no idea why the earth strap was there; mines the same and so is olmate. From what I know - it is quite common right thru to (possibly) the series 3's.
Being a fan of things like that; I would put one back as things dont work that well without adequate earthing. I have a couple of extra straps on olmate:D

Well fellas, the work on the olute will have to take a back seat for a bit :( the other one (yep not happy) - olmate - has started to smoke a bit behind the dash when started:( The amp guage flickers about and the "occassionally" points north and remains where it produces smoke and a smell that demands attention:(

Just what a bloke needs. Especially when he is off to melbourne this weekend and cant get stuck into it

What is of real concern is I am absolutely useless when it come sto electrickery and scared of a mere 9volts :o Yep - I can hear you all laughing now and even some of you egging me on. But seriously it will be gentle as I go. :o

olmate
10th April 2008, 06:14 PM

graceysdad
11th April 2008, 07:07 PM
Electrickery is nothing to be scared of, what you do is grab all that Lucas junk including the wiring and throw it at a cat, start from scratch and go all new, good heavy guage wire, lots of fuses and fusible link and an alternator, happy times! I am rewiring the Streak from scratch its easy really, they are so basic, amps guages are notorious for this in old cars, can be a regualtor problem, a wire breaking down or rubbed through some where, faulty gauge, an amps guage is a simple thing most likely your frying a wire back through the firewall, I have wired 3 old vehicles from scratch, if it scares ya just pay someone to do it, I am having dramas with my old girl Troy, getting really snakey with the whole thing, nearly had her dragged away today.

olmate
13th April 2008, 05:42 PM
GD, you make it sound so easy. I dont mind all that mechanical stuff but electrickery - fella; I dont like it.
Olmate is booked in with the auto elecs tomorrow and I shall see what they say. It would be best to rewire the whole thing but I shall wait until the verdict is given.
Whats going on with your ol car GD? Are you skinning knuckles? :o

olmate
14th April 2008, 05:50 PM
Well, I could be back into the ol ute this weekend as the problem with olmate was the 3 month old alternator. Charging to over 17 volts on and off, causing the Amp guage to smoke and flicker. Will be replaced tomorrow:D and yes - I can do that;)

Might put the battery in olute this weekend and give her a kick in th guts:)

Well - I put the battery in (after modifying the batt rack to take a 17 plate battery). She runs well. Clutch and brakes do what they are meant to; very happy now. Just need to finish off the battery clamp that I am making to take the bigger battery and that will be that bit done.

My ignition warning light (red central top on dash) comes on when the key is turned on and stays on whilst the car runs; doesn't go out.... :( Any suggestions??? The alternator is charging and the idle is set right - its gotta be something else. I hope so anyway. Not having a good run with Landy's and electrickery this week.

olmate
19th April 2008, 02:52 PM
New (well - reco) alternator into the ol ute and also put in a couple of guages that I had been wanting to get to. Also finished of some of the wiring around the battery and cleaned up with heat-shrink etc. She is sounding sweet but every now and then, when I turn the ignition on, the horn sounds.... so thats my next trick to sort out I spose.

Shall finish off a couple of floor bolts tomorrow and paint the middle section for my seat box and that will probably do me for the weekend. :D

Olmate does need a drop of oil in the gearbox so that will be done as well:)

Well I have had to stay home from work as the little bloke is sick. So I thought I should post some photos of the ol ute and the latest work on her:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/04/296.jpg
I have extended the batt base (5 cm) and built a top bracket for the 17 Plate Battery. The air cleaner fitment has gone the journey.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/04/297.jpg
And yes - the alternator needed replacement on this old girl as well (thats the second in the week on my Landy's. Hopefully no more for a while).

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/04/298.jpg
Got a few wires to sort out still. (hoping just the indicator and horn etc).

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/04/299.jpg
Otherwise I am very happy with the interior.

27th April 2008, 07:51 PM
Hi Troy,

The best that I have used is made by POR15 and is distributed in Australia by PPC (Permanent Painted Coatings).

Web site is Permanent Painted Coatings Home (http://www.ppc.au.com/) and the product that you are after is called epoxy putty, the data sheet can be found on this part of the website. PPC - Epoxy Putty (http://www.ppc.au.com/epoxy_putty.htm)

Reasonably expensive, however there has been no product that I have used from POR15 that has not worked.

It looks like a 1957-58 109 (fully-floating rear axle), unless it has been modified in the last four decades. Rear halfshafts will not fit series 2s or 3s, and are quite hard to find. Front panels are also different to the Olute. Petrol?

Easo - home brewing .. way to go mate :D:D:D

The trip off road will be great when you get back. The olute needs a front prop shaft fitted (I have a replacement one of a recent wreck) and I have finally got all of my hoop bows organised for next weekend. The Canvas will go on in the fortnight. A bit to do in the interior [still] and then I just need to get some more bar treads and she'll be right.

Anyway its now for the replacement vent seals and a couple of door buffers on the guards, when they arrive :D. Will save the indicator switch until last ;)

Well all, the decision has been made and I am now to sell the ol ute. It is a real shame but I just dont have the room where I live for a third Landy ( as I have found a 80" ).

Someone will get a decent Series 1 to play with though and hopefullly it shall be someone on the site so I can keep upto date with what they will do with her.

I have placed the add in the markets section for those who may be interested. More photos shall follow today when I get to taking some.

Now I can finally say that Ol Ute has been sold. She has been bought by Sleepy (Paul Sleep) and is in good hands :D:D:D

So it wont be long now until we can be reading about future progress made to Ol Ute by Paul and I start another thread detailing what I am upto with the 80" (Shorty) that will be coming home ;)

Good luck with her mate.;)

A sad day to see the Ol'ute go,:( This has been a very interesting thread to follow.
I'm sure the new "Shorty" thread will be as interesting.

Love your work Troy, good to see the sun gods shining on Sleepy as he pick her up.

Well, made it home ok - she didn't move an inch.:)
Slow ol trip, sat on about 85kmh. Chewing about 15l per 100km. The 90 was working pretty hard. You can see in the photos that the 90 was sitting pretty low in the rear. No dramas though - except the bumper to bumper traffic on the freeway - took a bit of life off the clutch:(
I've left her on the trailer for tonight and I'll unload in the morning.

Thanks again Troy she looks lovely - you've done a fine job:D . I'm sure she'll have a nice and easy, pampered life in the burbs. Can't wait to get her on the road.

I put some more shots up tomorrow.

To right Allen, It was a perfect day, no wind; nice an sunny. As Troy would testify I was a little nervous with the big load (I think the biggest thing I have towed is a 6x4 full of rubbish.) Glad I didn't have to fight the weather as well!!
