Disk brakes in a County
Are the County brakes the same as my old 1978 109 V8 or better?
I would like to know what it is the most practical an economical way to fit disk brakes in a County.
Is it a good idea to get the complete front and rear transmissions from Disco and swap them over?
Or is it better just to concentrate in adapting the disk brakes without touching the diffs?
How much can I pay for an unregistered V8 County as a base for doing it up?
Apart from the condition in the firewall what other problems I have to look for in a County?
Cheers

G'day Arthur, Justin here.

County 110's have front discs, but rear drums. They are quite good, but can be improved by fitting rear disc rotors, calipers, bracketry and halfshafts etc from a defender 1994 onwards. I also fit the defender brake pedal box along with booster and M/cylinder. This effecttively turns it into defender 4 wheel disc brakes without the vented front rotors though. It is a big improvement.

Rust is the county's biggest worry, bulkhead and sills, and rear crossmember rust can be extensive. I would pick a good rustfree example to buy, and worry about the mechanical stuff later. (Obviously get a full mech report done before you buy it...)

You can get a reasonable V8 110 for around 5K to 6K. I would go as far as suggesting spending up to get an excellent one, as it will last forever.

Thanks Justin for the reply, this particular example is 1986 and it is not registered. The asking price is $ 2.500.00 so if the body is in a reasonable condition I will have few a dollars to play. I will inspect it tomorrow, the owner say that the firewall is perfect and the rust is only in a part that comes from the chassis to hold the fender?
Tyres and brakes ok. It is running.
The owner have it for the last 18 years.
I will keep you posted, you never know I may turn up with it in Hobart nest March and live the Disco in the shed :) .........I doubt it :D
What I noticed from the image that I posted in the Technical part of the forum is that the interior is not tidy at all and there is damage in the dash.

$2500 is about right for a average model... why people pay $10k for one i will be buggered..

i paid about that for mine.

I'm converting mine to 4 wheel disc...

I'm using Disco diffs all round and ditching the Salisbury. but i'm gaining back the strenth of the salisbury by fitting lockers and HiTuf axles. Yes Salisbury have a stronger crownwheel and pinion, but i dont drive like a spud, so breaking a rover crown and pinion, should not happen..

The other thing you will need is a brake booster and master cylinder off a 4 wheel disc Defender... the county one does not have the push.

If you can shoot me an Email I can tell you about an inexpensive way to convert a pre 1993/post 1984 110 to rear disc brake using some wrecking yard parts and some non pricey factory parts.

Think we'd all like to see that one.;)

Any chance of a tutorial or a thread for the common thread section?

Cheers

Discs all 'round make a big difference, especially under load. I would try and find a disc salsbury rear and swap, standard County brake booster/master cylinder is good enough in mine for the moment, but have my feelers out for a larger unit out of a Disco/Defender as per sclarke's post.

That depends on the age of the 110. VIN HA onwards has the same master and booster as a 4 wheel disc Defender, even though it came from the factory with rear drums.

I put a 1996 disc axle in my 110, it has a PBR master (like EA Falcon). Not that impressed with it.
