Hi Guys
Anybody had trouble with COOPERS TD5 airfilters not sealing correctly in the airbox?????
I cleaned my MAF sensor a few months back, and fitted a new COOPERS airfilter at the same time.
Had it apart today and there is a lite coating of red dust on the screen of the MAF.On inspecting the airbox the seal between the filter and lid appears to have been letting dust in,not huge amounts but its there.
NOT REAL HAPPY!!!!!!

there is some plastic tabs on the bottom half of the housing that can get bent over and under the air cover housing stopping it from sealing a stealer did that to me along time ago but picked up on it.It is a easy thing to do when putting the top cover back on

Thanks Stevo
I know they are a tad fiddly to fit but pretty sure its right.I will re fit to make doubly sure.
Usually keep 1 old filter just in case, but cant find the last one(genuine),the shed is a brothel at the moment!!!! The rubber lid doesnt seem quite thick enough.

Do the OE ones seal either?? :)
My stealer went one step further and didn't do up the airbox clips at all... Lucky I checked!

,the shed is a brothel at the moment!!!! Some people have their own Business Jets, others their own Helicopters, but I dips me lid to you for having your own knocking shop.

What a guy!

I hope you get a good return on your investment.:D

Andy

Yeah I noticed the same thing yesterday. I have a Cooper filter and noticed a lot of dust around the MAF. Think I might try an original next time.

Any idea on how to clean the dust off the MAF?

CRC contact cleaner, flood it it evaporates off.
Put the tube on it and flush the sensor from the rear.

Hi Andy,
I come across this a lot, The Air filter box in these is very poorly designed and made from distortable plastic:o(In addition to having the air filter incorrectly fitted and those tabs damaging the housing/ filter:mad:)
I use rubber grease around the air filter element seal, both sides.

This will stop most if not all dust entering past the filter.

Maybe the box too Andy. Mine on the Fender seals perfectly using Coopers filters.

Following on from Ben's treatise on air filters - see http://www.aulro.com/afvb/technical-chatter/50650-air-filter-tests-finally-3.html - I'd like to suggeast that it doesn't matter what filter material you have if the filter box leaks past the seals.

Last week I had the opportunity to look inside the top of a forum member's engine and, consequently, inside his air filter, MAF sensor, air duct, and throttle body.

To be frank I was shocked!

What happened was that when I walked past the car I looked into the engine bay and noticed brown "muddy" residue on the ram tubes in the upper manifold. Then I looked inside the plenum chamber and wiped my fingers through a thick layer of more "mud". That prompted a comment or three so I was shown the MAF sensor which was liberally coated in dust. The throttle body was the same and there was a layer of grime around the butterfly.

I grabbed the filter element and the top of the filter housing and fitted it. The later P38A airbox (not like mine) is, apparently, the same as the D2. The lid (unlike my early model) has only two clips to hold it down. It was apparent that dust was leaking past the filter seal near the outlet on the lid of the airbox. It seems the box was originally designed to have a clip at that location but the clip was not fitted in production models.

The moral of the story? Well, if you have a D2 and do a lot of dusty road work, then you need to closely monitor the air filter. Yours may also be passing a lot of dust. If you have a P38A, you could revert to the earlier airboxc or fit the older cylindrical filter (which mine now has - see 4.0/4.6/P38A Air Box Replacement (http://rangerovers.net/rrupgrades/airbox/index.html)).

Hi Ron
I had a post on this a week or so ago as I found dust traces in mine.
It seems the lid can be fitted in-correctly.
JustinC said it was quite common, his answer is to put rubber grease on the airfilter seals.

Thanks Andrew, I missed this thread. I've moved my post (and yours) across.
