View Full Version : I have acquired a FC 101

I have just acquired a FC 101 - no 9620053A - Suppose I will have to join REMLR now.
The vehicle is a non runner at the moment but shouldn't be too hard to get mobile. The main issue is how to get it from Newcastle to Canberra. Any ideas at this point of time would be a great help - a 2.2 tonne brick that is nearly 3m high and not mobile is a bit awkward to get moved over that distance.
The questions start tomorrow:D, eg how much of the electrical system is 24v and how much is 12v (the fuel pump is only getting 12v).

Great work - do you know any history yet?
The good thing about the 101 is that a lot of engine and transmission components are classic Rangie and Stage 1 V8. Although - living in Canberra, you may want to have some woolie socks, snow boots and leg warmers as the front panel is just where your feet are.
I moved my S2B forward control from Trangie to Nowra using my Classic Rangie as a tow car, the rear step bar is rated at 4000Kg. The big problem is finding a trailer for the weight, we hired a tri axle plant trailer from Mac's Hire in Riverstone. The trailer is rated at 4 ton and has electric brakes on all axles and was only $100 from Saturday morning till Monday morning, you need a pintle hook on the tow vehicle.

Ahh Garry
Welcome to the sickness. I too have been bitten about 4 years ago.
Missguided 2 is a Australian Army 101. Previous owners have converted it to 12V and put it on Gas other than that its pretty original.
I have a full set of books and army service logs. I also have the circuit diagrams showing how it was converted to 12V.
On the transport question another member of the Land rover Club of Victoria has an English 101 he tends not to drive it long distances he has a vehicle trailer which he hooks up behind his TD5 Defender. it looks ungainly but the defender has no problem draging it.

Nice buy there. THat 101 was on e-bay for an insane price, my old man was contemplating buying it actually.
So come on, REMLR membership ;)
I'll add the chassis number to the registry, thanks for posting that. Interesting to see that it still has some unit insignia on the doors.
are you going to restore her (ie, full soft top??) . I'm very jealous !!

You also should have a damn sturdy bull bar as the driver is the first at the scene of the accident. One of the reasons I never really liked forward control trucks is having only a sheet of twenty gauge between me and the accident.

Brian at least in my civvy S2B FC I have 2 sheets of 20 gauge - the first aluminium one is to lul the rapidly intruding object into a sense of security before it is hit by the steel one.

I was just looking at the pic again, I love the little missile on the door - you will have to keep that.
Looking at your tyres they will need replacement very soon.
At present I have only been able to find the Alliance Traction Lug at $380.00 each and the Michelin XZL at $700.00+ each (nil stock). The MRF Sand Gripper has a speed rating too low for fitting to a four wheel drive. Which may also the a problem with the Alliance.
What are others fitting to their 101"s or 109"/110" F/Cs and at what cost where did they get them?

Thanks Diana - no history as yet except to know that the truck has been around Aust at least once and the winch has been used in anger and in reverse.
I will most likely hire a small truck with a heavy car trailer that I know I can get. Tare weight is the same as a disco 1 at 1950kg but mine weighs 2.2 with fuel, roof rack etc. I will make the truck as light as I can by removing the rack, bull bar, roof, fuel etc which will bring it back to about 2 tonne.
If I still had my disco I would use it to tow but hiring a light truck is a reasonably cost effective option.

Thanks to everyone for the comments - yep spotted the thin sheet metal at the front and the heater is in the huge number of spare parts boxes that came with the truck.
When released from the army the 101s must have come with a lot of parts - this truck came with about 6 boxes of new parts - steering wheel, steering column, steering relay, new 24v alt, radiator, high speed transfer case gears, distributors, armatures, airfilters - all new in JRA packageing - though the rats and cockroaches have made some of it home.
Unfortunately all but one of the tyres are at min tread, so will have to look at options.
Thanks

The big problem is that most car trailers have a maximum Gross Trailer Mass (GTM) of 2 tonne and with the weight of the trailer itself, can not legally carry much more than the weight of a commodore.
When a trailer has a GTM over 2 tonne, there are some very specific regulations: The trailer must have electric or vacuum operated brakes on all wheels. (Over-ride brake systems are not acceptable over 2 tonne GTM.)
The trailer must have a break away break system that will hold the brakes on for 15 minutes if the trailer disconnects from the tow vehicle.
The coupling must be rated to carry the GTM. (Most 50mm tow balls are rated at 2 tonne.)
the tyres and axles must be rated to carry the GTM.
While trailer hire companies are happy to hire you the trailer, most can not legally carry the load you wish to carry.
You will also need a tow vehicle which has a trailer brake system installed either electric or vacuum - although finding a 3 tonne rated trailer with vacuum brakes will be next to impossible.
It took us several weeks to find the plant trailer at Mac's Hire Riverstone.
If you have a friend with a Range Rover with ARB rear step bar and electric trailer brake controller, you can borrow my pintle jaw that was designed for the purpose.

I've spoken to antique tyres about bartreads. they can get 900x16 for $429, but if you clobber together an order of 20 or more they will give you a club discount. Might be an option. This is a firestone tyre. 750x16 are $219 and again, discount for more than 20 in an order.
I haven't looked at the mrf bartread (NDT) as yet, but they seem to be becoming more available in harder to get sizes. The alliance tyre looks good, as it is basically the same as the continental NDT that the unimogs use in the army.

Yes the Alliance Traction Lug look very much like the tyres on the Unimogs. Chalmers Truck Tyre service in Sydney - the local supplier gave me a quote of $380.00 each this week. (I think they are used by the Israeli Military - they are an Israeli manufactured item.)
The thing that is putting a spanner in the works is that most cross-ply tyres are only a G speed rating which is 90 KPH. Ag Tyres in Moree, the MRF importer, suggested the Sand Grip....
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/02/300.jpg
... until they checked their regs and tell me that it is illegal for a tyre service to fit a tyre with a speed rating of less than 140KMH to a four wheel drive. (Wow would I feel safe traveling at 140KPH in a forward control? )
The Michelin XZL 255/100 R16 are a radial tyre but it still only has a speed rating of 100 KPH which I think one would get away with.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/01/141.jpg
Now I have to go and check what the Alliance rating is.

MRF do also make a bartread
MRF Exports | Tyres | Military Service - NDMS (http://www.mrf-exports.com/product_details.asp?c=22&s=&p=23)
no mention of the speed ratings though.
So in military tyres in this size, Firestone, MRF and alliance seem to be the only three options.

Yes they do do a bar tread in the smalles sizes 6.00 16 for sure because I have them, and I believe also in the larger sizes. However if one intends to do long distances a compromise tyre would be ideal. Triangle, a Chinese brand have a highway lug pattern in 9.00 16 listed in their catalogue.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/01/221.jpg
It is a bit similar to the old All Purpose Lug (Olympic I think) but so far I have not found a Triangle importer who bring it into Australia.
My local tyre service (Cooke's Truck Tyre Service Nowra), suggested that Triangles used to be quite poor quality however that has recently improved and no complaints from customers in the last little while. The 8.25 16 was about $200 last time I asked.
If others are interested, a group order may be possible. I have also recently heard that Beaurepaires are another Triangle importer, so my next stop will be them.
Would anyone else be interested in a Highway lug on a 101 or 109/110 F/C?

I purchased Two MRF 900x16 tyres for $225 each for the front of my 101 from Moore Tyres about three Months ago.
No problems and the speed rating for most bar treads has always been very low, I think not above 110 kph.
The 101s usually cruise at 80 kph so its not really a issue.
Ron
Ps I am new to the site and live in Nowra and wouldnt mind hooking up with other FC owners in the area.

Hi Ron
According to Moree Tyres last week all bias ply tyres have a "G" speed rating which is 90 KPH.
What part of Nowra do you live? Which tyre service do you use?
My projects are all down there which makes working on them a pain! Neither of them running and both civilian 110", although I was hoping to have one ready for Cooma, but I need to swap an engine first.
The only other forward control I have heard about is in Kangaroo Valley - hasn't come out of the shed for some time and is a 3M tall S2B camper so quite poor off road capabilities.

I knew the S2B in KV with it's previous owner quite some years ago and have been told of it's presence there but have not yet confirmed that yet. It is supposed to be in a shed off Jarretts lane.
My folks live on a property near Tarara.
I usually use Cooke's Tyre Service on Norfolk Ave. in the Flinders Industrial Estate. They have got MRF NDT in for me previously to fit on one of my 80".
Will have to catch up one weekend.

I run a set of second hand Silverstone's the same that were supplied to the Malaysian Army. I will soon be looking to replace them as at least one of the tyres is at the end of its life.
I tell you what your lucky getting all those spare parts. A 101 will bleed your bank account if you need to replace parts that are unique to the model.

My truck is now home on my front lawn. :D
I bought it two weeks ago in Newcastle as a complete non runner.
Last weekend I managed to get the engine running and the clutch working. I moves on its own. Brakes are a lost cause at the moment but front brakes are locked half on - notg enough to stop it moving but enough to stop one power is reduced. I also removed (well I managed to get my younger brother to do it) the roof rack and the bull bar, spare etc to reduce weight for towing.
Towed the truck the 400km back to Canberra with morning. Tow vehicle was a Toyota Dyna 2 Tonne tray top. The trip went really well and wasn't all that slow.
The only excitement was when loading and unloading. When the front wheels go to the top of the ramp on the back of the trailer,I had this sinking feeling as the weight of the 101 was enough to lift the back of the Dyna about 3 feet off the ground and force the rear of the trailer onto the ground - sorry didn't get a pic of that. When backing off the trailer I tried to get a movie of it but I took my finger off the record button just as the back of the truck started to lift.
When it happened I was concerned the Dyna might not have been up to the task so I loaded a little more forward to ensure weight would stay on the rear wheels. All went well. So the 101 may weigh a little more at the front than I anticipated.
I have some time off from work in Feb/Mar so u can guess what I will be doing.

Hi garrycol
The next time I vist Canberra in the 101 I will try and hook up.
Every year in the 101 usually in the first weekend in August I do a run to the bush between Oberon and Goulburn with a whole lot of other slow ex army trucks for the weekend and try and do some camping and if we are lucky snow driving.
It would be great to have another one along and it is a good run from canberra.
PM me.
The fuel pump on a 101 is 12 volts regardless if the machine is 24 or 12 volt .
THe 24 volt machines work through a resistor.
The brakes are similar to a series 3 in the drum department.
I think front shoes are slightly wider that the rear........they can be interchanged in a emergency.
The master cylinder is special and a special quad ring is important and hard to find.
The booster is special but can be rebuilt........I do have some information on this.
Have fun ....regards Ron

I'm in Canberra Monday 18 and Tue 19th sadly not with the 101:(
I agree the master cylinder is a special case. I've not had to rebuild mine yet touch wood. I would check the shocker rubbers too. They had a habit of self destructing the top rubbers on the rear and both top and bottom on the front.
Breaks are about the same as Series 3s. Be aware that they can get air stuck between the tube running from the top and bottom slave cylinders.
I look forward to seeing it at Cooma.
Oh does yours have a platoon name on the door? I can't see from the pictures.

Shockie rubbers are u/s. I have worked out where all the bleed screws are and have been pretty innovative in the past in bleeding systems so we will see if I still have the magic touch. The only thing I have on the drivers door is a rapier logo - also my spade holder is on the drivers side of the nose where most others I have seen have it on the passenger side - not sure if this is important.

I don't have the Rapier logo and I can't see if it was ever on my truck but I know there are at least 2 vehicles from the Missguided Platoon. As I understand it they used to operate in 3's.
I'm not sure about the spade holder. The Land Rover club of Victoria ran an article in their magazine last year which had a number of operational shots. I'll see if I can drag them up.
I haven't had a problem with the 101 break bleeding but I have the same breaks on my 68 Fire Striker and lets just say I was ready to set it on fire and dance on its ashes at one stage:twisted:
