A mate just called me up and he has snapped the input shaft and it has filled the box with metal,it's a right off so an exchange is going in.How common is that? I have never heard of it happening. Also how much is a clutch?. He has been quoted $800.Thats seems like alot. Thanks Pat

re the clutch it depends what your talking about, parts & labour or just parts.
If it's parts only sounds a bit dear, depending on what model car it is and what's included.
Basically, more info needed.

Pat, remember the thread a week or so back about all gears but 4th ?
Dave Ashcroft (Ashcroft Transmissions, UK) mentioned that it was likely a broken input shaft, he's seen it a few times.
The going rate, parts and labour (retail) for A Tdi is in the $1500-$1800 range.
Retail price for a Tdi clutch kit could go to $800, particularly if you include a new fork, etc.

G'day Rick,
New clutch kit from LR, around the $1200 MARK, NOT INCLUDING THE FORK OR SPIGOT BUSH!!! A Valeo or Borg and Beck/ AP kit from aftermarket, which is OE clutch anyway, is around the $690 mark including a fork and spigot bush.
Labour, about 7 hours max,( eg at $88/hr we would be $616.00 incl.GST)
Flywheel machining $50 to $70.

Well it's happened but it must not be that common as I have never heard of it before.Anyway $2200 for a reco box is a good price,he'll have to work some overtime. Pat

Hi JC.
I never even think of quoting genuine stealer prices, was roughly estimating what retail would be through those excellent wholesale
private importers that we all use. ;)
Pat, Dave suggested it was a broken shaft in in your original thread ;)

:D:DShocking aren't they!!
But I do it all the time..I show the customer the box the clutch came in and explain that the identical one from the dealer network is almost twice as much!!
Fills me with a warm glow everytime.....:p
