Hi there

There has been alot of discussion concerning tyres for the old series ones, they are available in Australia through a company called Australian Tyre Traders:

** Australian Tyre Traders ** 1300 761 802 ** (http://www.austyretraders.com.au/)

I just purchased 700 x 16 lug tyres for the Fire Tender - with tubes for less than $120 each (fitted and ballanced)

What about 6.00x16 or 6.50x16?

I have an 86" SWB from 1955 which needs new tyres, and I think these sizes were the original fitment (please correct me if I am wrong on this).

Hi there David

Extract from the 1949 owners manual - page 57...

Standard fitment: 600 x 16 T28 Dunlop tyres or an optional extra being the 700 x 16 T25 tyres.

Therefore either would be fine - the link I posted have many sizes availabe (including 600 x 16's).

Ahh - thanks for that Wayne. I looked in the workshop manual I have but it wasn't clear what they originally came with.

I would have thought there was a fair difference between the rolling diameter of 6.00 and 7.00. It has 205x16 on it ATM and I don't want to go to a larger diameter because I have enough trouble accelerating with the 205s.

Most if not all Series 1 (swb) here came with 6.00 x 16, either bar tread or RTM (earlier ones usually bar tread as this was widely available as the standard jeep tyre). These were often replaced with 6.50x16 and 7.00x16 in a variety of treads. 7.50x16 was rarely fitted to Series 1, but mine had 7.60x16 when I got it, which despite the designation, was a slightly wider 7.00x15. Popular tread patterns were "winter tread" and Dunlop Roadtrak, a directional lug, but by far the most common aftermarket was RTM.

Antique tyres in voc are another good source.

I understand that the Dunlop T28 is no longer produced. What sort of tyre was this? Agressive? bar tread? more road biased? bias ply? I guess that radial may not have been around back in the late 40's early 50's.

Has anyone got a picture of one?

I'm afraid that the designation T28 means nothing to me, so I can't help on that, although I have probably seen them!

Radial tyres were invented by Michelin in 1946, but took a long time to become common. They are listed in the owner's handbook of my 2a, but were very uncommon in Australia until the 1970's. In the 1960's they were very expensive and used mainly in Citroens (owned by Michelin) and a few other French cars, or as aftermarket tyres in high performance luxury cars. The first I heard of their being used on Landrovers was for sand tyres in the mid sixties. I would be very surprised to hear of their being used on any Series 1 Landrovers (at least in this country) during their use as working vehicles.

Wayne, these are similar tread pattern to the old Bridgestone Jeep Service and Goodyear Custom Extra Grip Hi Miler. Should work well on the Fire Engine.

I remember having Winter tread (can't remember brand) tyres on the old Kombi and they were a similar pattern also.

Hi there Numpty

They are not the tyres I originally ordered - but I am very happy with them, also since putting them on I a couple of friends are also ordering some for there vehicles.

They do have a very harsh tread pattern - and it not as if you have to worry about road noise as you are driving a Land Rover.

I recently ordered 4 Dunlop RTM's in 7.00 x 16. Price was $165 each fitted, balanced and with new tube.
Got a price from Beaurepairs of $220 each fitted then found a company in Frankston that are obviously more interested in my business.

Dunlop are currently out-of-stock but 100 arrive late February, a number were already backordered (maybe other LR's heading for Cooma ?)

I have an Roadtrack Major on the S1 with excellent tread that will be used as a spare. This is 6-ply but the current RTM's are 8-ply. They are a crossply tyre which is in keeping with what was originally fitted but maybe you can take originality too far sometimes.........
