P38A Oil Presure ? Blead ??

HI All,

I replaced my timing cover as per my recent post after I was leaking oil from the end of the Oil Pump etc etc.

Anyway, I have done the repair in the last couple of days,Removed sump, oil filter, droped oil pick up, removed water pump fan, harminic balancer and replaced cover complete with new oil pump gears !

In the process the engine was completely drained of oil, when I finished the job toninght (with the help of Taff :thumbsup::thumbsup:) we filled with coolant and oil and started her up !

It had a noise like the tappets had no oil ??? Can any one tell me if I need to prime the oil pump or any thing that im required to to to complete the job ?

Jeremy If similar to pre 95 V8....Yes, yes. :eek:You must pack the pump with petrolium jelly (or similar) and pull the dizzy and is a good idea to make an adapter and spin pump with a cordless low torque drill till it gets firm. :). Well at least pack the pump and kill coil till oil light goes out.
I hope it did not run for long? If so it may have sh-t the pump and con rod bearings:eek:

:confused::confused: I run for about 5 mins and the noise did not apear to be getting any better ?
Could the oil pump not be working ? The gears were spinning freely when i fitted the cover ?

Remove end cap and pack pump. Is good idea to prime any pump after overhall.:)

It's a totally different type of pump. It's driven from the nose of the crankshaft and it's inside the timing cover. To pack it would entail removing the sump, the timing cover, and all the ancillaries. YOu can't drive it with an eectric drill

If it didn't, you could try unscrewing the top oil line and injecting oil down into the pump.

If you want to spin the engine over without it starting, do NOT remove the spark plug leads - that will damage the electronics. Disconnect the connector to the coil pack.

Ron Thanks Ron..for picking up on this one...What a worry:eek:. If it were mine, Id have the sump off and be looking. Injecting oil into galery sounds good though.

OK, I ran it for 5 mins and the Oil light was not iluminated ?!?!? But When I replaced the cover, It had a new presure switch fitted that had a different style of plug on it ........... My presure switch had a different thread so I made an adaptor to fit the wire on and rang rovacraft and they told me that would be fine ?? So im not 100% sure its OK but did not run it any longer incase !

I will try oil down the pipe and check again !

When I replaced my timing cover last year, I filled the pump with oil but most of it ran out whilst it was being fitted.

When the new engine went in (with the same timing cover) I don't know what Bruce Davis Performance Landys did. They had pulled the pump down to inpect it and to modify it - and Loctite the cover plate screws in as they have heard of cases where the screws come loose. They may have packed it with vaseline.

Come to think of it, when I first pulled a timing cover off back in 2002, I might have packed the pump with vaseline.

to sort the oil pressure thing.


turn the ignition on. the oil light should now be on. then remove the connector from the oil pressure switch and the light should now be out. earth the connector and the light should come on again if so stop panicing,

connect up the oil pressure switch again and start it if the oil pressure light goes out you have the required 8psi minimum of oil pressure to support idle (it would pay to try to get a propoer pressure gauge in where the low oil sender is to make sure you get full oil pressure). oil pressure should be up in less than 10 seconds.
