View Full Version : 300Tdi into V8 (disco)

Had an oops yesteday and rolled my disco...

Now I'm looking 'cheap' ways to get back on the road.

She still runs fine (I drove it out of the bush) but body is stuffed, every panel.

As V8 disco 1s seem to generally be cheaper than TDis is it much of a job swapping my motor (and box if needed) into one?

Will there be much of a worry with engineering it to get it back on the road?

Any comments/hints much appreciated.

Paul

Why not unbolt the whole body lift it off , remove the rolling chassis and fit a V8 body on to it. probably cheaper than trying to convert a V8 to Tdi.

Good point :)
No gear worries either :D

I'll back up the body swap idea.

doing it that way also offers you the benifit of being able to get to all of the body work to rust treat it properly, and all of the vehicles electrics to degremlinise it as well....

Want mods for fuel tanks/water tanks/air tanks? suspension changes/repairs. So much easier to do without the bloody body in the way.

I know of a 1995 V8 manual disco 3 door for sale, never used off road, but has a snorkle, he is after $5k for it.
then you can sell the V8 running gear for about $2k or more

In the last few days there was a MA series Aspen silver 3 door that was a Tdi advertised on ebay by the informal 4wd parts supplier garyclr (?) resident in the Blue Mountains area. It is highly possible that the vehicle was not purchased, as it was for $50(?). It was missing engine, gearbox and some interior - but was fairly complete otherwise and most importantly the body was in good condition. That means it is highly possible it was not written off and could be re-registered. (Very important here in NSW). I can't find the listing at the moment nor a listing by the same vendor - someone in the Blue Mountains may have dealt with him before and have his contact details.

I though of a body swap but thought it might be easier doing the motor, my mate is a diesel mech and wants to give the motor a going over anyway as it's been upside down even though briefly.

Its got to be another disco whatever I end up doign as I've not long shelled out for the lockers!

Lots of deciding to do.

Whatever happens it won't be happening in a hurry due to $$$

As to what happened at the time good question wasn't going quick (couldn't was following an old 45 cruiser ute) went around a corner, the back got a little loose the next I know I was in the air upside down... lucky I landed on my wheels and generally in one piece.

I was waiting for someone to ask for pics, I didn't get around to taking any but my mate did will post them once he emails them to me.

Don't know about tripping on something, my mate watched it all in his mirror and couldn't work it out.

The lockers were out, only used them in low range.

How big a job is the Range Rover swap? are the body mounts etc the same?

Note that that wasn't a complete body swap, as it says that the RTA and eng. wouldn't certify a RRC body on a Disco Chassis.

You need to fit the TDI + trans to the RRC Chassis.

Ahh yes, I hadn't read it for years and forgotted:(

Just thought it'd be easier than answering about the body mounts being the same

i know im a bit late on this topic but thought i answer anyway, i converted my 95 disco v8 and installed a 300 tdi two years ago, it turn out more of a job than i thought, had to install the tdi auto box as the v8 auto doesnt fit which means the props as well, the gearbox subframe had to be changed as well, along with radiator, hoses etc, and the engine mounts of the v8 have to be cut off and the tdi welded in a diiferent place, the fuel tank and lines etc also replaced, the rad and intercooler fit almost straight in, the battery has to move unless you rewire all the loom, ( starter on other side) exhaust and mountings, throttle cable, servo pipe, autobox cooler, and so on on on... but i did it and its been fine and a fuel cost saver.
