View Full Version : 4bd1 inlet manifold - is it reversable

Just another question to help me progress the turbo kit.

I am looking at the possibility of flipping the inlet manifold on the n/a motor up side down so the inlet to the manifold faces up instead of down. This might make it easier to match up with a cross over pipe from the compressor. Also I am trying to avoid paying $350 for a turbo inlet manifold.

The bolts on the manifold seem to line up, just dont know if the ports will line up. Has anyone looked at this or has any one got a gasket lying around they can use to check if the ports line up any which way the inlet manifold faces?

thanks

G'day Peter,
Just be aware there is very limited room under, & you may end up having to modify the bonnet, to clear the inlet cross-over.

it should go over ok. but you will have to watch clearances on things like the distick, breathers and the underhood clearance.

i origionally used the N/A manifold, then 6 months later changed to one off an NPR truck, which had a larger diameter inlet mounted directly between cylinders 2 and 3.

The manifold ports are symmetrical and will fit. But the extra mounts off the manifold won't fit. The ones that mount onto the fuel filter on the front and the throttle linkage bracket at the back.

thanks all for the replies.

the bonnet clearance should be ok. I changed the frame around for the bonnet. I'll have to check the fuel filter mount.

I've tried a few places in brisbane for a 2nd hand inlet manifold without luck.

I'm not worried about the diameter of the inlet side of the manifold as it is bigger than the outlet diameter of the compressor on the turbo.

Do I need to replace the inlet manifold gaskets if I take it off?

yeah change the gaskets, less than $5 anyway.

Dont forget the mount for the fuel rack cable to switch your engine off. As for the filter mount, i didn't make one, and left it there held in by the fixed metal fuel lines. Then last week, the return from the injectors snapped and sprayed bloody diesel everwhere. I gotta make me a bracket for that.................

yep after looking at those two items it's probably easier just to fabricate a 180 degree bend with something for the shut off cable to attach to.

thanks Andrew.
