Rear springs to suit an 80"

Hi there all

A good friend of mine has just broken his rear springs on his 1952 80" - are you still able to purchase them in Australia.

If so here do you get them from - and approx costs etc.....we could always put in second hand ones but he would perferr new "if possible".

And it is likely that the correct thickness leaves will be unavailable - but acceptable springs should be obtainable from any spring works that actually makes springs (or is an agent for someone who does).

Yes that is exactly what I found out today, 6 mm is what I was offered at Brooklyn Spring works and one other place just said he was not interested and it would be cheaper to import from the UK. As a guide the Brooklyn people said 11 leaf pack $750 for a pair.

When I had mine made about 3 years ago, I went to Liverpool Spring Works at Moorebank. Yes they were thicker material but from memory were only about $350 for the pair.

I had to take the specification page from the workshop manual and they made them up from there. The old guy who did them, used to work for Henderson Springs in Chippendale (later Henderson-Federal Springs) and actually did a set for my dad on our first 80" in the 1960's. He was a million years old in 2004 so you may have to hurry! :D

It may be worth investigating WW2 Jeep rear springs . Somebody in the USA used them on a 80" as he could not find any original 80" replacements in the USA.

You would have to bush/sleeve the eyes as the Jeep springs have a threaded screw in type bush .

New Jeep springs are available here as WW2 Jeep restorers are a plenty and there is a market there. Marathon spares in Northern NSW ( Walcha and Tamworth ?) is the largest of the dealers .

I have a set of new/reconditiond rear narrow springs for a 80":)... Would that help at all? I am in QLD....
