View Full Version : Fitting the cheaper, Arrow air snorkel part 1

Over the las t two days I fitted one of those el-cheapo snorkels that don't just fit as per instructions :)
Firstly I removed the mud guard and fitted the snorkel to it.
Then I removed the air horn from the airbox and fitted a couple of 80mm water pipe bits from bunnings.
I then went to Super Cheap Auto and bought a 74mm air pipe from the "rice rocket" stand.
I chopped up the "dog leg" bit that was supplied (bit didn't fit anything) with the snorkel. This became the medium between the water pipe and "Turbo" air pipe.
Next step was to cut a hole for the air hose.
More to follow.
(Sorry, I cannot upload pics as normal, my computer died and I'm using SWMBO computer, with no cute ftp)

Piping was all put in place, glued, screwed and clamped.
Then a little "Flat Black" to make it all pretty :D
Then I cut up some thick rubber sheet, fitted it around the hole in the side, held on by medium self tapping bolts.
Fitting the "Turbo" hose onto the air snorkel was a PITA!
I wound up cutting two of the rim wires, pulling it on and then clamping it down.
After that, put the guard back on, leaning heavily against it!!
The 76mm pipe was a little too large, but I got there :)
After that, I used some small brass self tapping bolts to hold the top bracket in the doorway and more flat black..
Clamped the air intake on the top, more flat black and it's done :D:D:D:D
Later when my new computer arrives, I'll up load larger pictures.

Mate,
It was not that hard :D
Worst part was aligning the snorkel on the Mud Guard.
I took Phill's advice and did it slowly and carefully as the "plan" or "Cut Out" is way off!!

Cost???
Well, I bought the thing from E-bay, $325.00, $12.00 from Bunnings and $30.00 from Super Cheap.
Total $367.00
The "Proper Ones" Safari, was $530 or some thing like that.
Cheers,

WOW, you can get Safari cheaper than that.... you just need to bargain a bit with them....
ARB most times can slash 20% easy...

So if the template is of how did you go about getting the holes in the fender right. Have thought about getting a snorkel from 4wd systems Australia only thing is i'm scared i'd stuff it up.

Good effort Ron
Im in the process of modding my air system to accomodate a snorkel of my own design and by the looks of the airbox in a D1 its the answer Im looking for
Thanks for posting and the pics that go with it and to the knockers of your job get back in ya box
To many people can do better after someone else has already done so
And I say kudos for having a go and getting it done

I lined the template up against the air snorkel, then remarked the holes. After that I put long bolts in the snorkel that were the same length as the air intake, then redrew the hole for that :D
Simply really.

Just another question what did you do with drain holes at the bottom of the filter box as mine do not have valves? Have i lost mine or is it normal for the square filter box to be like that? Just if they are still open water can still get in so snorkel would not be really useful for wading. Most of the cylinder style air canisters have a valve on them to let water out but not in. Do people just silicone up the holes or are there proper valves that are meant to be in there?

Mate,
I left mine as is.
Mine is a V8, so it cannot go too deep in water :)
But it can go deeper than it could before. As you know, the air intake is just behind the headlight, so a bow wave up the front would snuff it

Filled the Disco with fuel today, 20l per 100km, around town.
Even though that sounds terrible, it is doing slightly better than before, in our hilly Brisbane :)

Thats not entirely true. ;)
I've driven through quite a few rivers up to bonnet deep with a nice bow wave happening and the V8 just purred though.
That said a snorkel is the next mod planned for my disco. Very soon too.

Nice job well thouh out and neatly executed.
The only problem I see with the way you have done it is that you take up the space where a second battery would normally go.
The Safari snorkel comes in the side of the airbox and frees up that space.

Yes, I had thought of a second battery.
It was too hard to put the 80mm pipe in the side and I didn't want to downsize :)

Well guys and girls,
There is a lighter side to snorkels on a V8!
In fact I'm having a ball :D
Where I live there are a few "Stop Lights" where the left hand lane quickly disappears, and they merge with the right.
Now there is always one, who thinks if he gets into the left lane, along side a slug of a vehicle, he has a good change to get well in front.
Enter the Discovery with Snorkel, yong guy traveling a few cars behind, sees, Disco with snorkel at lights! "Yipee, it's a diesel and I'm going to mow it's ass like grass in my Landcruiser :D:D:D:D:D".
Lights change and a silver Disco, with snorkel, takes off with gusto, bogan in the lC is madly swapping gears and looking quite pale, as the outside lane disappears.
I guess as he pulls in behind the Disco and reads "V8", he realizes his mistake :D
I hate to say it, but I've become a 4WD baiting, 58 year old hoon :D. Mind you I don't pick on larger engined 4WD's :)

done the same in my tdi against a modded 3ltr pootrol, i saw him try to go round the outside so i just booted it and left him behind with barely even a smoke trail.
Also i got my snorkle thru a private sale, guy had it advertised for about 12months and was gradually dropping the price, he got to $550 so i offered him $300 delivered from QLD. He said yes and it was brand new in the box :D.
