This may be of help,
Melbourne, Australia - Public transport FAQ (http://www.custard.net.au/melbtrans/)
from the city you can catch a bus to vermont south ( Bus No 75 ) not sure if there is a direct route to wantirna , but looking at whereis.com it's pretty close to wantirna.

the guy thats picked up my car has offered to pick me up as well......
i was just trying to get as close s possible to make it easier for him.....as he has already gone out of his way......
the airport is nowhere near wantirna from what i can see on whereis.com..........
and neither is the train station......but if i catch the train to the end of the line......
it should greatly reduce his drive to pick me up.......
but not being from around there.....i have no idea whats where....or how far.......
if worse comes to worse i will give you a ring.....
do you still have any of those land rover caps from when you did the jackets and caps a couple of years ago........?
i seem to have lost one of the caps....and the one ive got left is starting to fall appart.....

Getting an airport bus to the eastern suburbs will be the easiest way. Getting a Taxi will be the most expensive way - I think you can hire a car for a day cheaper than the taxi ride.
Otherwise try Metlink (http://www.metlink.com.au) as a public transport planner (I haven't used it, I just found it).
also look up Home - Airport Bus Eastside (http://www.airportbus.com.au/) or Skybus Super Shuttle (http://www.skybus.com.au)
For a single person, the bus is cheaper than Fuel, Tolls & Parking costs.

I live right next door to Wantirna in Ringwood.
Michael2 is on the money for best transport if Hiline isn't able to make it. I see the skybus airport bus most days.
Otherwise bus to City, Train from City to Ringwood (Lilydale/Belgrave line) and Bus to Wantirna down Wantirna Rd. Fairly easy.
Enjoy the warm weather! (Now that should at least bring some rain)

I'm flying in to Melbourne on the 16-Feb at 6am. I could give you a lift from the airport as I'm going close enough to Wantirna. Sounds like you're a week early though.
And yes you can even hire a car, tolls, fuel and parking for a day cheaper than a taxi.

Try Skybus Super Shuttle (http://www.skybus.com.au/) there's a trip planner on their site, may also help.

Seriously Zook, take up Ray's offer to save you the stress of Melbourne's public transport system that doesnt go anywhere near our international airport and is just a general PITA to travel on not to mention the violence and vandlism of late on the eastern lines.
Now that you have the information you need, give Ray a call and only use it if in dire need.

It's not that bad. The hardest bit would be getting from the Airport to Spencer St Station (err, um, Southern Cross Station or something...). The term 'city' used above is a bit vague... You want Southern Cross Station or Flinders St Station.
As mentioned above, an airport shuttle bus does this but i have never done it. Then it's just grab a train that says Ringwood, Lilydale or Belgrave. Get off at Ringwood. Call your lift (your now 5 mins away from Wantirna).
It's quite simple really as long as the shuttle bus works out. Call the airport and ask...

A taxi would go the other side of $100 - even on Sat. Minithemoocher is on the mark. The big red skybus goes straight to Spencer st station - about ten bucks, you jump the train there and follow mtm's instruction. Thousands use the public transport here every day and live to tell the story. It will probably be under $20.00. I go to tassy for work and do it that way so my wife can use the car. The other alternative is the airporter, its a mini bus/trailer and will probably go to Wantirna or beyond.
Thats about $25.00
