I have had a hunt around the forum and can't find the info I am looking for possibly my search-fu is weak. Anyway, I am trying to convince the better half that a Disco is the perfect family car. I am hoping that besides the "But, Honey it's a Landie!" defence I can get some info.
Firstly, I am looking around for a manual, diesel around the 2000-2002 year bracket. Have read (on another site) that Series II are what I should possibly looking at. With a spend of around 20K. Will be using it as a daily drive, annual ski trip and hoping to get into a bit more camping.
Now the questions:
1) Average service cost?
2) Should I get it serviced by the nearest LR dealer or can any one recommend a good mechanic (Nth Shore, Sydney)?
3) Any faults I should be looking for?
4) Should I be going for a diesel?
5) Anybody got one they want to sell me? :D

very poor search-fu
2nd most asked question on the site!:p
standard answers are
buy the D2A
no such animal as standard costing, varies wildly between dealers,
no need to visit dealers for servicing,
ensure it has full service history.
[ACE is worth every cent]
Faults in a LR diesel???
a couple of standard items,,
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/common-threads/34318-td5-engines.html
very hi-tech engine.
goes well,,
can go VERY well,,
and you can assure the missus,,
they are extremely good family cars,,,, :)

Have you noticed there are two different grills on the D2??
The one with the funny headights and blacked out front is designated the D2A from 2003 on,,
Has the all important CDL reinstalled.
Dont ask!,, [RE]SEARCH is your friend,,,:D

ACE = Active Cornering Enhancement
Basically its a hydraulic swaybay (front and rear) that optimizes cornering ability

Forget the manual, go the auto, works better with the diesel engine.
They are the perfect family car, my kids love the seating position and the view they get.

Hmm, just posted something to AussieLandRover who's looking for a late D1/early D2. Your budget is a little bigger which gives you more scope.
check with Red Books, this is what people actually pay, not what they're advertising them for. Red Book AU : Your site for New and Used vehicle prices (http://www.redbookasiapacific.com/au/home.php)
attached is a bunch of comparison data I put together last November on all D2's in the $11k to $27k bracket. Hope this helps, you'll see a comprehensive list of all the options and average Klm's for year.
Look for:
1. ACE (Leans into corners) much smother ride and less vomiting from the passengers
2. Rear A/C, (something to keep the kids and dogs happy)
3. A 6 stacker CD (keeps the boss happy)
4. V8 petrol (yes I know diesel is better, but I just love the sound)
5. Auto G'box ('cos the Traction Control, Hill Decent Control, ABS, Electronic Brake Force Distribution all work really well together)
6. Std Air Suspension on the rear is good for pumping it up by 40mm for those rivers and logs you will occasionally meet.
6. Oh and a sunroof is rarther nice to quickly cool the interior down after a while parked in the sun.
My bobs worth, look at an '01 or an '03 ES model if you want the extras. The early '02 had the Centre Diff Lock removed with later '02's having it back in. The '99 and '01 had a CDL but can only be locked with a spanner (helps if the TC fails)
On servicing, go to a trusted local mechanic, only use LR Dealers if necessary.
If you go V8, don't worry about the minor oil leaks (I'tll almost certainly have some) but check the Rocker Cover and Tranmission gaskets.
Check for a split Air Cleaner housing, it means it had an early LPG conversion that caused backfire, may not be a problem in itself but its $400 for a new housing.
And No, you cant have mine. Absolutely fantastic vehicle, I love it.

BTW, this the one we test drove....
2001 Disco (http://www.carsales.com.au/used-cars/dealer/LAND_ROVER/DISCOVERY/details.aspx?Cr=3&__Nne=20&__Ns=pCar_StatusSort_Int32|1||pCar_Price_Decimal|0&State=New%20South%20Wales&distance=25&silo=1000&seot=0&__Qpb=true&Model=DISCOVERY&Make=LAND%20ROVER&R=5265117&__N=4294965541+42+4294965540+898+834+285+258+287+1 216&__sid=11758CAC541E&state_id=80&trecs=9)
A couple of things I picked up:
A little clunky going into 3rd..that might just be me
Gaffer tape on passenger side of widescreen
Marks on bonnet..looks like it had a protector fitted at some stage
Full service history at same country dealership
I like the colour...so did the wife

Very nice, I too like the colour. You know you're inviting a ton of opinions by asking here dont you. So heres mine...
Seems a bit pricey though. Book $$ on that car is $14,800 to $17,000 for average 110K's-180k's so its done the right mileage.
I'd go see this Land Rover Discovery Es II 01MY 2001 in NSW, Victoria - Discount Used Cars Australia (http://www.discountusedcars.com.au/usedcars/5097456-0/details.cfm'make=LAND%20ROVER&model=DISCOVERY&location=2&sort=priceASC&price_min=15000&price_max=25000&year_min=2000&year_max=2004&Category=1&page=1) as a comparison just to know what you can get for a lot less if you go V8. You can buy 4000ltrs of fuel with the difference. and get the ACE.eather, Fog Lights and all that other bling.
Good hunting, its your choice, (well, your wifes, anyway)

I have a 1999 D2 manual Td5. It is set up for off road and I love it.
But I have two teenage kids and the rear seating area is to small for them. Me and my son are both over 6 foot tall.
T/C and Abs faults are common most times its a connector. easy but a reset is needed. $45 at M R auto.
Service cost $140 oil and two filters every 15000km (done by me)
The D2 is a great fourby and excellent off road. My Td5 has a 130kw chip and I have had no problems with manifold bolts or any engine problems.
CDL is fitted in the earlier D2s.
I will part with it for 1.2 mill
Hope I have helped you...

Same here over 6 foot myself...except my son is only is only 20 months
My wife is mainly concerned that we can fit a Safe n Sound AHR Baby seat in baby capsule mode in the back plus a booster seat for the current Junior Sly712.
I will part with it for 1.2 mill
Ummm.....you take a raincheck on that :burnrubber:

1999 TD5 Manual, 161,000km, $17500 (listed at $21,999), one owner, full history. I think I still may have paid top dollar for it :(
First thing is a trip to Graeme Coopers to give it a once over, unless anybody can suggest somebody good on the North Shore of Sydney?
Just joined the Owners Club too....:)

It is pretty stock from what I could tell....although I did notice a funny little black box to the drivers side....anyway, the list from the dealer:
Dual Airbag Package, Anti-lock Braking, Automatic Air Con / Climate Control Alloy Wheels, Cruise Control, CD with 6 CD Stacker, Central Locking Remote, Control Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Engine Immobiliser, Power Steering, Power Windows, Radio Cassette, Roof racks, Automatic/Self levelling Suspension, Traction Control System, Air Conditioning, 17 Inch Alloy Wheels Brake Assist.
Or are you talking about future enhancements? :)
Looking at one of those Vortex muffler system, possibly a different chip and maybe a snorkel....and CDL, I think:D
