Well I just went ahead and made a cash offer on an automatic Tdi discovery. I like my chances but I won't know for a couple of days.
I just want to ask this of the auto owners - are they, in standard guise, rather sluggish on take off for the first 10 or so metres?

Yes and especially when cold, once warm though it should be good.

Yes thats what I found, the pick up on the V8 is good, but I found it a little unusual when I drove Gavins (300Tdi) - and then the turbo spun in.
Once you get use to it - it's just fine

Current Victorian road law prohibits the driving of V8 Discoverys for people on their Ps, if it wasn't for that reason I'd have a V8 (with LPG:o) in a flash:):):)
I think I might take the rest of the week off from AULRO - I need to think about other things as the suspense will surely kill me!

you han have the v8 as the vic restrictions are based on power to weight ratio so you cant have an ss or a wrx but a disco is ok cause it wieghs more

I find the auto better off road to a manual Joel

Yes they are a little sluggish off the line, you can improove it slightly by chopping out the centre muffler and giving the exaust a bit more flow to let the turbo spool a bit quicker and when the engine is warm but the air is cold the kick along really well even off the line.
I'd have a relook at those restrictions if I were you Joel, Dirtdawg is right and seems the V8 Disco's are so terribly underpowered they easily come within the guidlines.
Yes Im with Gav, the autos are awsome off road, as long as you can get your head around a bit less engine braking going down hill.
The auto's in 300TDI are quite often quicker off the line than the manuals, and when towing are much better.

Up to 1 July 2007 that was the case. I got my licence 3 weeks later and fall under the new system.
Restrictions on driving high powered vehicles
If you are a probationary driver and obtained your licence after 1 July 2007, you can't drive a vehicle with:
An engine of eight or more cylinders
A turbocharged or supercharged engine
An engine that has been modified to improve the vehicle's performance.
One of the nominated high performance six cylinder vehicles which include BMW M and M3, Honda NSX, Nissan 350Z, Porsche (all models) and Mercedes Benz SLK350.If you get caught driving any of these vehicles, you'll have to pay a fine and you'll receive three demerit points.
Vehicles excluded from these restrictions ...
Diesel powered turbocharged or supercharged vehicles (without engine performance modifications)

Sorry Joel but where did you get that from?
I was sure when I looked it up for one of the guys at work off the vicroads website that there were exclusions for vehicals with a certain power to weight still.
But I dont really care so it's not worth really worrying about for me anyway:D

My appologies Joel, your spot on, vicroads must have been a bit slow off the mark as it was about 6 months ago that I was looking it up for one of the trainee's at work.

So Joel, if successful in your purchase, will you bring her to the trials on the 24th to show her off?

Its a 90% done deal, I feel simultaneously elated and sick at the same time:confused:.
Its TOTALLY stock and will be staying that way for a few months as I added up the expenditure on the 200TDI and nearly had a heart attack.:D

I'd love to try the auto out on trials but I'm in two minds - Day 1 of Uni is on the 25th so I'd die if I broke the thing off road - and I might need to have one last off road drive in the 200 to say goodbye:eek:
