View Full Version : A few D2 questions?

I am shopping around for a 1999-2001 D2 and am trying to find one with ACE. I have been told that you can only get ACE with AUTO's, is this correct?
Is ACE really worth it or is it just another electrical extra on the disco that could give problems?
What about the gearbox's. I would prefer an auto but if a disco of that vintage may be getting to age where problems may start to arise, I would be happy to go the manual if there will fewer issues with it.

Also as I do more research on the Disco's I am starting to wonder if I am making the right decision due to the reliability concerns, as my wife and I with young family do like to go to out of the way camping spots. Or have they been generally been sorted out by now.

Thanks

Michael

I have D2 with ACE, and it's a manual, ACE is great. mine just seems a bit noisy for my liking, even after putting a new pump in, I've only had the car a short while but sems very reliable, it's getting a much needed off road workout next month and don't have any worry about using it.

cheers,

Ray

Thanks for the reply Rayngie,

were you not worried about not having the CDL internals on the 2002 D2. Thats why I am only looking at '99 - '01 so I have the option of installing the CDL actuator at some stage.

Have you had any/many probs with your D2 since you have owned it?

Hi,

The previous owner had installed the CDL out of a D2a, so no drama's there!, in saying that, the traction control is brilliant, there's enough guys around here without the CDL mech and they still go out and use the cars offroad so not having one can't be all that bad.

The only three problems was blowing a MAF sensor soon after i got it through water coming through the Airbox, and one of the SLS airbags has dropped down twice , but has'nt done it again, and the drivers window actuator gave up the ghost.
No other problems ( can't get the DVD working though ), it got a massive service at Coopers when i got it, they replaced a few various bushes, pulleys and gave the thing a tighten up allround, new fluids everywhere, it cost a minor fortune but got given a clean bill of health, have had no drama's whatsoever since, otherwise drives really well, I came from a D1 as well, it generally feels a much more modern car all round, but like any car, it's all about on-going maintenance.

cheers,

ray

Michael, I cannot comment on ACE as I specifically did not want it due to the off-road work I do with my vehicle. I've heard it's magic on the bitumen. With regard to the CDL, I found it is only required if you do extreme articulated work with the vehicle. My 02’s traction control is fine most of the time until more than one wheel is off the ground at the same time on separate axles. I had DII 04 CDL components fitted. Having had two D1’s, the DII was limited in it’s off-road capability without a CDL.

The DII is a great model, packed with technology. This technology increases risk in remote situations as remote location mechanics are either frightened to touch them or don’t know anything about them. I experienced this in remote NT even with my D1 tdi a few years ago.

A lot of problems and reliability issues arise from poor or inexperienced repairs done to the vehicle over time. This is also true for other makes. Many LR “specialists” don’t follow manufacturers repair instructions. These processes and specifications are documented for a reason and a lot of them think it’s not necessary to follow them.

One thing to consider, don’t buy a Discovery because they appear cheaper, to initially buy, than Cruisers or Patrols. An ageing Disco is a money pit especially if you rely on mechanics to maintain them for you. Having said that, I accept high running costs as I am a LR owner by choice.

Hope this helps…

Cheers

:eek::eek::eek:.....ACE is better for offroad work as it disconnects at low speeds and therefore gives more articulation than standard.

Ace is even better again on bitumen..just love it

I concurr that ACE works well, mine makes no noise and is freekishly stable on low and high speed cornering.

if your lookiing for a V8 D2 look at the .pdf I posted yesterday in this forum (link): http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery/50870-please-help-me-buy-disco.html

All ES models have ACE. It is an option with the others.

If you want a better ACE tech explanation look here: ACE - Active Cornering Enhancement (http://www.landroverclub.net/Club/HTML/ace.htm)

As for reliability, theres plenty of more fragile kit on a D2 that'll go first before the ACE. But all Discovery's work well and stay alive if the owner has a little passion for them, a bit like a dog.

Get use to thinking "just another $200 bucks and she'll be fine, shouldn't need to worry after that" Its the best way I get by.

Remember, this is the best off road platform in the world.

ACE makes it one of the best on-road also. :BigThumb:

FYI, here's a full review to read on the 2002 D2:

Thanks for all the info.

What about the oil in the wiring loom problem.

Has that all been sorted by now. Was it just a one off loom change or does it need to be done again at certain intervals?
