Hi Team,

I am doing a project series 3 LWB 109' and I have a qustion about gear box swaps

I am putting in a Holden 308 motor using a Marks adaptor kit

My current vehicle still has the original 4 speed box and I am worried the new engine will be too much for it

My question is, do the newer rover 5 speeds (any version is ok) fit into the series 3 into the original mounts or with little modification ?

Any Help Much appreciated

Cheers

I don't think so. Besides, a 308 will kill any Rover gearbox except the LT95 4 speed.

What Big Jon said and what I said in your same question in REMLR (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/remlr-technical/50994-series-3-gear-box-swaps-what-can-used.html#post685204)

The LT95 is much longer than the original Series box, you will need to move the front of the engine forward and have modification around the rear of the transmission, the prop shafts will all have to be "specials" and all the mountings and the gearbox covers will have to be manufactured.

Why not start with a Stage 1 or County for the conversion - lots less engineering required.

They come up fairly often,:) some have the famous Isuzu.:ohyes:(I've seen them come up on Ebay.) The Stage1 is what you are replicating with your s111. Althouh some have coverted series with early Rangie Runing gear there is a lot to it.You may be beter off waiting for a rough stage 1 to come up you will need 3.54 diffs, stronger cv's,Bonet, suport panel etc. Most people hang on to the good stage 1's and County's. Some say they were the best Land Rover ever built. I tend to agree.
Cheers RR.

yep, me too. Maybe think about an auto for the 308. Mark's conversion to c4 hybrid is awesome. Ours even has the Isuzu in front of it. I've been told that an auto is capable of handling the extra torque and power better than any manual. Also the torque converter will always pick the highest gear. Good for all but rock crawling etc in a 4wd situation.
cheers

I must say that while I have an auto RRc I have always preferred manuals, but when you have 28 sets of traffic lights in the 7 Kms between home and work an auto was the obvious choice.

Where I really don't like auto-transmissions is when towing, you can cook the transmission very quickly and so oversized transmission and engine oil coolers are a must.

The reason for the post is that what I would really love would be a a Marks/or other brand adapter to mate a New Venture NV4500 5 speed to an LT230. The NV4500 is the successor to the NP3400 4 speed, and are the standard box in GMC and Dodge Ram pickups. They basically have an extra low 1st gear and then 4 gears spaced in the usual range with 5th/top being an overdrive. The Yanks consider the NV4500 bulletproof.

Bobslandies has the NP3400 over his S2a transfer with a 4.9 litre Windsor and it is a great combination. Don't know if he will take it to Cooma though.

Addit: Just Googled NV4500 and LT230 and came up with this site - looks to be a great conversion and you can use a small block Chevy 350 and probably your 308. Chevy V8 into a Series Land Rover 109 (http://www.expeditionlandrover.info/lonn_V8.htm)

That set up would be utimate in auto:D No big GAPS! They are a great trany.:D May drown power with a smaller donk,(Not 7.3) hence more Ltrs/100:wasntme: The windsor is the pick of the fords. Still a top set up. :D

Ive know that the supra 5 speed fits onto a series transfer case well with a ford 6. Should be more than strong enough
