Hi all,

First post here:)

The following is regarding a petrol 2.25L motor from a 1974 series 3 long wheel base.

I have a series 3 that is running on 2 cylinders:( I have some mechanical nouse, so plan to rebuild it my self but have some questions.

Can someone recommend a reputable dealer that can sell me all the various parts for the engine (rings, bearings, gaskets etc)?

I'm going to need to get a Mechanic to fix the head, and have a question about compression - Many people suggest shaving the head in order to acheive a compression ratio of 9:1 - there are also some that say this is madness, what are some general comments about this? Also, any recommended mechanics that can do the head in the Brisbane/sunshine coast area?

Other mods include extractors, holden carby and modified cam.

depending on what you want to do with the engine will depend on wht mods you do to it.


you can shave it enough to get the compression up to 10.5:1 but I dont think thats such a great idea

for longevity of everything leave it stock. the best supplier for the bearings n rings n things is the place that does the machining for you, unless your doing it yourself in which case somewhere like four wheel drives in melbourne or M R automotive in redcliffe QLD is the shot.

A slightly taller cam with a touch more overlap can make the world of difference to them especially if you get a set of extractors to suit the rev range you get the cam sorted to. but this makes field repairs a bit trickier as all the specs for bits n pieces wont be by the original book.

As for the carby stick to the zenith if your going to go off road as the holdens are renown for flooding and starving at high angles while offroading.

The Sreies petrol is a tough motor,yes they can take a big increase in compression as they are basically a diesel motor,both share a similar bottom end.Beware going too high in compression as with no lead in the fuel these days pinging is a big problem.
Research a few of the UK websites,they get them 2.25s flying.Its not too stupid an idea to import the bits from the uk,you get exactly what they use and much cheaper there.Just make sure you keep your total order to less than $1000 aus to keep you from getting import duty applied.You will still need to pay 10% GST on the value,but you will exempt from the 17.5% VAT(their GST equivelent) included in the UK websites prices.Plenty of people here have bought there own parts in.
