HI all,
for a while now i have been considering this conversion but i want to hear from people who have done it. i what to run a 5 speed manual with it i have heard that they are a very expensive conversion? can they be turbo charged or is there a turbo version i don't know much about these engines so any help would be great.

Umm... 4BD1T IS turbocharged, hence the T at the end of the designation. 4BD1 is naturally aspirated. If you do a search there is heaps of information on these pages.

Lots of work, lots of dollars, but superb off road and not too bad on road either.

Start saving if you want to do it properly. If you are mechancally minded or in the right trade it will be a great benefit.

I am a bit slow in replying but hopefully the following should help.
Re the Isuzu 4BD1T, there is a mob in QLD [EMAIL="www.qmrautoparts.com.au"]that are selling brand new aftermarket 4BD1T's for $6500.00 complete fan to flywheel, 12 or 24volt. The engine produces 135hp, 324NM of torque @ 3000rpm. By all accounts these engines appear to be the ducks guts, and they are offering 12 month unlimited km warranty, the scuttle-bug about the industry says they are good. Now that's the real easy part. Buying second hand can open up many cans of worms, but can't be discounted. Another outfit "Brisbane Motor Imports" are offering S/H tested runners at $4950.00. There are plenty of other suppliers around for S/H donks.
Either way if you want to raise the HP by 18 and Torque by 32NM you would need to fit a air to water inter-cooler. Most all of the Rangie manual boxes can be adapted. I have done two, to date using the LT77S box. The S box has bigger input shaft bearing. The required (or best) radiator is the 3 core tropical (dare I say for a Nissan GQ) they take very little modifying to fit and will outlast any RR rad by heaps. Moving on down the drive train, the LT230T transfer case is the choice for this recipe. Re the diff ratio's if you stick to std 3.5-1's and are contemplating running bigger rubber and want to tow, you will get a 100kph in 4th without beating the engine to death (depending on engine configuration) I am running 4.11-1 diffs with 318x75x16 rubber giving me 100kph in 4th @ 3120rpm. Now every dream like this needs special motivation so maybe you could bite off more that you can chew and start chewing like hell.
PS
I forgot to mention you need 10grand for all the parts including the donk.

Take a look at my thread on the 4BD1T conversion I did on my Defender - 16000+ks and going very very well. PM if you would like to talk over the process

Christopher

PS Thread is in Isuzu Landies section

Option 'B' for box is the Isuzu MSA/MXA 5spd which naturally mates to the engine then an adaptor plate is required to mate to the the intermediate case on the LT-230 transfer. Dougal on this forum has been running and developing one for a while now.

This gearbox is larger and heavier than the LT77(s) or R380 but it's designed from the off to handle this engine.

As for the Chinese jobs, I'd like to hear/read some more intell on these however, they appear to have the oil filter in the right spot - to miss the front propshaft - and the 12volt option/fan to clutch 'package' is a good selling point for this conversion.

Lots of experience with these engines from AULRO members. Have fun:D:D
