Yesterday I went out with a few mates and played designated driver.

As I was walking up to the pub I motioned to get my licence out - the security guard at the door says "Mate, put it away, I don't f**ing wanna see your bull***t fake ID, just go in".

On the way home... there was a booze bus across all lanes. I pulled in as directed by a police lady and put the window down expecting to be an obvious "target". A male cop comes over doesn't test me, points forward and shouts "Get out of here, leave, go, go, go, move, moveeeeeeee" rather abruptly.

Why bother having laws?:D Will Miss VicRoads tell me to put the stamp duty on the Disco away when I go pay it tomorrow?

Laws are there so that the good people can do the right thing.

Generally coppers are pretty good at determining quickly wether you have been drinking or not as are many of us that do drug and alcohol testing. He may have just decided you were a skipper and obviously had not been drinking and wanted to get you out asap so they can get more people checked and target real drink drivers.
Just a thought.

Speaking of ID - when I was working in Melbourne a couple of years ago I went out to dinner with a couple of mates and their wives. Afterwards we decided to pop into the local for a couple of drinks and got asked for ID at the door.

Funnily enough, I didn't have any, I had left my wallet in the hotel and just brought some cash with me.

Now the youngest person in our group was 35, there's me, 42 with grey hair mind you, saying "Mate you have got to be kidding!"

The bouncer was the usual big & beefy with less than three brain cells to rub together (apologies to any "crowd control professionals" on here ;) ).

"Duh, I'll have to ask the boss, he said to check everyone's ID"

Eventually he let us in but it was boring and full of 16 yr olds so we left.

Joel,

The Police obviously could not smell booze in your breath :D

i wanna know why its called random breath testing when they always check the driver. :D

The do alot of that around here, and at weird hours of the day, but i have never been moved on without being tested.

Same here - I am ALWAYS asked to give a breath sample... and I am a tee-totaller! They usually ask if I've had a drink, and I always reply - "no, not ever actually - I don't drink". Maybe they just think I'm lying every time and do it out of spite. The machine always flatlines and I have to restrain myself from saying "I told you so".

I got pulled up by the local copper, car full of people and booze heading to a beach party, he carried on like a hero, made me blow in the bag twice (reckoned it was wrong) threatend me with bodily harm, told me he was going to haul me into the station etc. I didnt help my own cause by being a bit cheeky but did tell him he pulled me up about 4 hrs to early. Well bugger me if when coming home he didnt pull me up again. Well this time with the car smelling of all my drunking mates he hauls me out of the car, I stagger, fall over and stagger some more, well this time there was no questions asked, I was bodily thrown into the cop car and haulled off to the station. The call was made to bring the breath test machine over from the main station about 1/2 hr away. Well wasnt there some carry on when I blew 0.000 about 4 times. The copper was then going to book me for about 20 different things until the sarge that brought the machine over seen the funny side of the whole thing and told me to p**s off. The copper that gave me a hard time was a guy I went to school with and this was only a couple of years after that.

A few years back, having dropped family at Sydney airport at around 5am for early flight, I was pulled over on Bradfield highway near north Sydney for a breath test. On rolling the window down the young officer asked " have you had anything to drink tonight sir?" Normal question but having been to bed and risen early it was no longer "tonight" and the question threw me a little. My wife came to the rescue and said" it is not night now it is morning", after which the officer gave me a funny look and said to move on (without breath test). Poor bloke must have been stuck there all night. Wonder I wasn't booked for being vague!!:cool::cool::cool::wasntme::)

RBT is just a fact of life and part of holding a drivers licence. If you can drink grog at any hour of the day and drive when you like, then I guess you have to expect one or two clowns on the road who are over the limit.

Its easy (and gutless) to have a shot at the cops - you know they're not going to thump you or verbal you. I know they've got better things to do and having attended a few alcohol/speed related fatal prangs if you saw/experienced the ongoing effects of drink driving you wouldn't mind a bit for being stopped for RBT. It only takes a minute or so...

As for ID at clubs - just another annoying hoop to jump through.

personally l think we should have more testing stops and we should expand to testing for drugs as well as alcohol

and

when you blow positive your car should be impounded immediately and your license should be stopped there and then and if you want it back you got to court and argue extenuating circumstances

and

you lose your car for length of license cancellation

and

if its not your car the company or owner can pay a fine to retrieve it

only way to stop the many many many clowns who continue to drink drive after license loss and may also deter the few who think they can get away with it and should stop otehrs from lending their cars to mates.

I got RBT'd a few weeks back... after having two glasses of red over dinner only an hour before. I felt like I had drunk nothing so wasn't concerned and I told the lady officer and she said well lets see what we get...... 0.0000 I at least expected it to show there was something in my system!

The father of a mate used to be a victorian cop. He said that in his experience the average male can drink half a bottle of red (over a meal) and still be fine to drive (well below 0.05 anyway)

Yep, I don't condone drink driving, it just amazed me that they don't bother to test some people. I reckon a lot of people over the limit must get lucky like that. It proves though that its not all about revenue raising - because if it was run like a business, everyone would get pulled in and tested to maximise $$$:).

As I was getting a lot of late evening work and IT callouts in the wee hours, I gave up drinking all together 3 1/2 months ago. I'm not sure of the variables in build, weight, sex etc, but it used to take me over 24 hours to return to 0.00:eek:.

I don't know if having sex sobers you up, I guess it really depends on your choice of partner :D.

They don't make a cent out of RBT, it must cost the Gov't a fortune.. You'd be unlucky (on average) to get more than $1000 fine for a High Range conviction  Offset that against the cost and you're in the red bigtime.

Dunno why they didn't test you mate, maybe the alco broke - he could've been a bit more pleasant too.

If all the vehicles were being stopped and spoken to you would think you would be tested.

If random vehicles are being pulled over there is a good chance the officer may have spotted a vehicle that required more attention.

You would be amazed how many people get caught for drink driving still, so how many are out there not getting caught?

Cheers Andy.

PS: Police don't always have the manpower they would like.
