Hey Folks, just wondering what is the best method/best product for removing gearbox fluid off the car. I had one of the cooler line hoses burst on the highway and now the car is pretty much covered in gearbox fluid, paint work, suspension, brakes, wheels, engine bay and windows. Left a nice puddle on the highway, that is what wasn't burnt on the exhaust pipes to create that beautiful white cloud of smoke behind the car. Had the fire extinguisher handy before I opened the bonnet - just in case.

Got the car towed home from the coast, looks like another weekend of car work coming up

Thanks for help

Should wash off with a mild detergent - one of the car wash detergents would be best.

Get the CT truckwash.
It's around $10 for 1 litre and makes about 100 litres, so it'll last for a long time. Non solvent based, biodegradeable.
Won't damage your paintwork.

Ignore all above posts.

KENCO Shift It - Heavy Duty Cleaner!

spray on leave for 5-10 minutes, hose off, thats is all I have to say.

Lucky i didnt take your offer to go for a spin in the car... I would have felt like shiit if that happened while I was at the wheel.

for the paint work....i would just wash it the way you normally would......
if its really oily.....use a bit extra detergent in your bucket......

for everything else underneath.......a can or two of degreaser......spray on...hose off.......

if its now drivable with out risk of it catching fire you can drag it up my way and I'll get it over the cleaning pit at work and you can cut sick with the gurnie and truckwash there while I set up for a small project Ive had to back burner.

saturday pm works best for me... Ive got a wheel bearing on the trailer thats going funny (no surprise Ive been nursing it for oh 10K Km now and about 18 months) so Im going to pull that one so I can source new bearings and rubber for the trailer for the bearing changing and tyre changing lessons IF people are still interested.

Hi GuyG,

I assume you have a Discovery II and it's popped the oil cooler lines at the quick connect junction where it plugs into the radiator, just underneath the air cleaner box?

Can I ask you why the hose popped? Was it because there was some work done on the radiator recently and so the hoses were disconnected?

Are the replacement hoses any better in design compared to your old ones?

Some good quality car wash detergent should do it and plenty off it, conventional degreaser should do the under bonnet ok

For really hard to shift oil stains on paint I use prepsol.

For the underside if you leave it there, it will prevent it rusting. Just wipe off the excess.

The car is a 1990 rangie, which had the engine rebuilt before Xmas so yes the radiator has been out. There had been a slight leak at one of the connections which had been tightened. The hoses were old and in need of replacement at some point, the hose actually broke and it wasn't near a join which we undid to remove the radiator (I don't think anyway)

I am taking up Daves offer, as all the front suspension bushes are new and have no idea if gearbox fluid will do them damage.

As to whether there better I don't know, but my father was impressed with the way they were put together - maybe Dave will shed some further light on this.

Cheers Guy

Ok, so just finished putting it back together, lost about 5 litres of fluid:eek::eek:, thank goodness I had another container handy, so now to clean it, and yes the hoses look pretty good to me - not that I know much about hoses:D.
