My mechanic had a look at our Land Rover Yesterday and told us that the power steering rack is worn out now he has been quoted around $1,500 to replace with a reco rack.

Does anyone know anyone else that will sell the cheaper or is this average ?

Get a new mechanic... Discoverys don't have a steering rack, they have a steering box .

If that requires repair, it is possible to overhaul them. We use a local chap here and haven't had any dramas. If you remove and refit the box, you will probably pay about half of what you have been quoted.

Yep my mistake sorry it's the box that's worn out and needs replaceing.

Well if anyone knows of a place I can order one from so my mechanic can replace it it would be great.

Try Google. It is your friend. There would be lots of places in Vic that could rebuild your steering box.

From what I can see, this is the Victorian arm of the company that I deal with here.

I did mine about 12 months ago - $680 exchange from Graeme Coopers at St Peters NSW. Took me about 3 hours to remove and refit and only needed 'normal' tools and a ball joint separator - workshop manual helps too.

They're a heavy bugger but its worth the savings if you can do it yourself.

$1500 sounds like a punish to me.

I would if I didn't have this damm neck & shoulder problem I have.
I called Land Rover in Geelong exchange box as well $1,100 and that's a set price even if mine is not repairable as other places I have to leave a deposit and if mone is non repairable I'm slugged around $800 on top.

Hi,

Give Toorak Tractor Co. in Braeside a call (03 9587 2866).

They have a heap of old LRs in their drive way and always give me a good price on new stuff (eg. New PAS pump $295.00. No C/O costs).

Cheers
Murray

I have been put onto Ritter Land Rover in Burwood and they have quoted $750 for reco $990 for new plus $250 fitting and if my box is stuffed not repairable and extra $100 ontop. It also includes the alignment as well.

This has been the best by far.

They are pretty good to deal with & have had no issues with them at all.

I have already contacted them they do not deal with the public so Ihave to go through AutoPro or Bursons and when I contacted them it was a major rip off or would be a mojor rip off.
