Can anyone that owns a TD5 in the club tell me if they are happy with them or not. We are thinking about buying a 2004 model turbo diesel want to use it for offroading and towing. We have been told if we chip it it will be better for towing and what are they capable off roading? We currently own a GQ Patrol.

Yeh, I'm happy with mine, 01 TD5 that is exceptional at both. Damn good car.

I have a stock TD5 and tow a 2t boat with ease wouldn't waste money on a chip. ACE is worth every penny!

lro11 thats a funny thing, I don't have ACE & wonder why would you need it, mine handles corners really well as it is. With the chip though I know what it was like before - good around town but highways with hills had me kicking down a cog most of the time, after the chip it just chugs up in top gear, no fuss. I'd be keen to drive a disco with ACE, maybe I should go test drive one!

Get a drive of an ACE D2 Ricey,TOP STUFF!!!!
I have 2" spring lift and 235/85 MTRS(equals at least another 1 1/2 inch lift).
I can go real hard around roundabouts with no body roll.
Our Classic Rangie or my mates 80 series are scary around the same roundabouts at the same speed!!!!

I have driven both with and without ACE mine also has 18" wheels which help. I know this is a broad statement but I reckon it handles better than my old M3

Hi andsue, TD5 2001 bought new love it will not be selling it.

153K things replaced, radiator, fuel regulator, new injector harness oh and a battery.

Still drives with plenty of power just like the day I drove it off the factory floor. Has been kept well serviced.

The trick is to buying one of these cars is make sure there is service history from a Landie specalist not just the local BP mechanic.

If your going to be towing give dobbo a PM he is about to do some upgrades to his TD5 for the main purpose of towing.

Plus fuel economy is excellent.

Sorry as per your last question a D2 Td5 is one of the most capable 4wd's around when shod with decent A/T's. Well it's not in the same league as a D3, but big price difference don't forget.

Reckon I might take a spin in one, pity ACE can't be retro fitted though, I've done a ton of upgrades on mine to change it over now. I've just found it easier to go over the roundabout on my street:D

I've just upgrading to a Disco with anti-roll bars:o. I'm amazed how flat it rides in corners!

Active Cornering Enhancement.

Have a look at this.

Discovery Owners Club :: Tech - Active Cornering Enhancement (http://www.discoveryownersclub.org/tech/ace/)

It explains the lot.

ACE is also a relatively bullet proof system too believe it or not, about the only thing that may one day need replacing with the ACE system is the pump.

Yes it does make a 2 ton D2 corner like it's one rails.

The 2004 model is probable the best model Disco in that shape and best Land Rover I have owned. It's an auto Td5 with ACE 265/75/16 tyres winch 130k and last week I upgraded the ECU to give me a bit more power. The power increase isn't hugh but on the highway it's very noticable, I love it. Off road it's a very difficult vehicle to beat, it goes everywhere. Don't hesitate about buying it just do it. Oh and it's been very very reliable and well maintained.

Cheers

Love it!
Yes it has it's quirks, yes I've had the odd electronic issue (mostly due to wear & tear), but mine is an '01 with ~180000 k's on it and it's previous owner didn't really understand 4WD's enough to recognise and resolve some of the issues that came up. I am resolving these.
I've had Pajeros, Patrols and Cruisers all of which were fine vehicles but I just feel different in my D2 and I dread the day that I've worn it out because I won't know what to replace it with (that I can afford anyway)!

Have a D2 2004MY (2005 first registered) from new.

Great car. Done nothing with it except a chip. The only issue I have is that the chipped engine is hard on the auto-box clutches, especially when the box doesn't shift out of overdrive on hills. It produces too much power and a couple of times I have had slipping clutches as a result (overheated). I now use 3rd to knock it out of overdrive (seems that overdrive operates in both 2nd and 3rd).

Took it off-road when I first got it to see what it was capable of and really impressed. Don't take it off-road now, have a Stage 1 for that.

Have had a few electrical issues but they were mostly covered by warranty.

Economy is good. Last long trip (about 1500 k's) averaged 10.3l/100km.

I now have a 01 TD5 Auto, up graded from TDi and am pretty impressed with it, nice and comfotable to drive and towing is a dream, I just got back from a 1500km trip pulling 2Tonne and was impressed that it sat on 100-110km all the way, off road well it depends on how extreme you want to go, for me touring and moderate off roading, the car is great and more than capable,

like everyone else I wont be selling mine any time soon,:D

2002 Td5 D2 auto.

Absolutely love it.

This is my first Land Rover and I was a bit nervous about buying one. Our mechanic told us not to; but I bought it anyway. I've had it for 3 years now and never want to get rid of it. Even the mechanic has come around.

Ours has ACE and I reckon it's a good thing both on and off road.

I really like the fact that they are very "car-like" to drive unlike a lot of other 4wd's which feel very truck-like. My wife enjoys driving it too & is not daunted by it at all. Very good off road too.

I first heard that song in the camping ground at UDP Falls (now called Gumlon) in the NT - sung around the campfire by a bloke known as "Two Heads" (a Tasmanian), who was the driver of a Kon Tiki Tours coach - they had set up camp behind where we were.

While I like John Williamson singing it - he can't hold a candle to "Two Heads". :D

Also one of my favourite songs. If you like that - see if you can get hold of a song by John Schumann (ex lead singer of Redgum) called "For The Children". Think you might like that one as well. :D

Yep, had a good experience with our first one, the door locks can fail and are repair by replacement. that was the biggest problem we had.

ours was a 2004 build and basic, No ACE, no airbag suspension, no DVD or walnut trim, black leather interior.

Make sure you get one with a Center diff-lock (we never needed it but if you are towing or into off roading i suspect you will want it)

I do think that they are a small vehicle, the inside seems to fill with stuff quickly but then that limits what you can take, less is more :)

this forum is a great place for info, help, and guides.

Yep., I have a 1999 D2 ,340,000 km's. on the clock, since I bought it at 319,000 km;s I've replaced the front drive shaft with a greasable one, replaced the injector harness with a modified one, slowly replacing all cooling system hoses, have centre diff lock internals, yet to fit linkage. Only got one oil leak [that I know of] to fix, have had it off road, and extremely pleased with that [ my inexperience saw me bogged, but that's another story] Not chipped, and never will be, I drive like a granny, mainly touring, but the old girl hasn't let me down. I think the secret is regular servicing, and treat them well well, they won't let you down. Bob
