While under the D2 pulling out the hookes joint this afternoon I noticed the front passenger side stearing knuckle is covered in oil.

You can see from the photos only the steering knuckle is covered in oil. Components adjacent to the steering knuckle are clean.

What would be the likely source of an oil leak in this area of the axel.

looks like the boots are dropping a little cv grease to me or the axle oil is starting to weep past the seal.... unless youve somehow managed to get the cassette bearings converted to oil and leaking.

hows the spray pattern elsewhere?

Axle seal. LR replaced it with an updated seal design which allows for some eccentricity in the shaft (runout). I just did both mine on the P38A.

You need to get some higher rated car stands.:(
I agree with p38arover.

Is this someting which requires immediate attention or does it just need to be flagged for attention on the next routine service ~4000k away.

It took me 5 years to do something about mine......

I was replacing the upper and lower ball joints so I had the seals done at the same time.

They're not really rated to hold up a 2 1/2 ton 4x4. They should at least be rated 2000kg for your safety.

Are you going to balance the entire vehicle on one stand?? For supporting one corner, 750kg rating should be adequate. 1000kg should easily be more than enough. 2000kg? Overkill.

BTW, it is the axle end seal leaking, as noted by others above. That amount of leakage should't be a huge concern, get it sorted at the next service.

That's not a leak yet - it's not dripping !!

It's like the TD5 water pump leak bulletin where the red coolant stain isn't classified by Land Rover as a "leak" ;).

i agree with the 2000 kg (looks after any shock factor), a static 750kg is fine but they arent always static loads .. :P
