Man my life has changed since I last jumped on the forum...

I've moved down to Brisbane, which has been good, hammering around the sand islands on the series III is a real treat. I introduced the lovely wife to the joys of off road rovering, which she is now totally hooked on.

Even more has changed, said lovely wife is now pregnant with our first child, which is great.

However, the writing seems to be on the wall for my awesome Series III, as it probably isn't the most appropriate family car, and it will be quite a while until I can take a "family" camping trip in it. So it looks like the S3 has to go, although I have no idea what they are selling for these days...

...which leaves me with the predicament of what to replace it with? At the moment I have my sights set on a late 90's 300 TDi defender, seems to be a good compromise between a more modern car, but the old Land Rover style I love so much. The idea of 4 cyl rego and it being somewhat simple to work on my self is somewhat appealing.

Any comments on the 300 TDi as a replacement for the S3? Are they a relaible comfortable rig to burn around in, or will I be kicking myself I didn't get a TD5 within a couple of months.

Wise comments are most welcome, and man I am glad I dug out my password and username off my old PC - this forum is still totally awesome!

Cheers,

Leon

Compared to the S3, any 110 or Defender is quite civilised, but at the same time familiar. Coming from a S3 you would have difficulty distinguishing between a Tdi and a Td5, so I would not worry too much about that - just pick the best one you can find without worrying too much about which engine! The main advantage of the Td5 is that they are newer.

My series 111 cab chass was taken over by a growing family and i went the 110 County(i always had a soft spot) with a 3LTR TD deefa motor fitted:):).It is surprisingly enjoyable to trudge around on the speed limit. So go for it and as previously mentioned.

updating from the series to a tdi/td5 is going to be a step up either way you go.

the tdi takes off a lot like the series and just keeps building where the sereis used to start to peter out thanks to the turbo. the td5 is the same again but needs to be spun up a little harder as to develop the power its capable of it really hangs off the turbo.

its going to come down to what you value more. mechanical simplicity or overall power in combination of weather your going to be happy with an older vehicle or want a newer one.

Being picky here, but I assume you're talking about the 300 Tdi, which is 2.5 litres and not 3 litres

Congrats on the upcoming child mate well done:cool::cool:

Have you thought about a early model disco as well then maybe you might be able to keep the S3 and give the lovely wife the disco:angel:

Just a thought

Yo thanks for the advice all.

I've done a bit of looking around and thinking about what I need. I think the option is the beloved S3 is definitely going to get the shuffle, and I'll replace it with an early Discovery as suggested - I imagine I'll be using the second car a bit more, so a disco will be good for burning around town, and taking the new tribe out into the bush. Then I'll look at getting a Defender further on down the track when the family gets a bit older after subsequent kids and so forth!

Thanks for the great advice.

A Disco 300TDi, without Airbags or alarm, good service record, might be the car for you.
