Dont want to start a political debate from this (even though I probably will), But
Has anyone with kids in year 9 or higher received the laptop computers promised by the new Government for their school children?

Huh....:confused::confused::confused:
I always thought that the government was giving you access to a computer i.e. it will be at the school.
I don't think the intent was that every child will get his/her own laptop to dispose at his/her discretion, intentionally or not :D

Thats how i read it, there will be a pc for every child to USE ie not sharing with other kids in the same class.

Perhaps the government could "invest" in something worthwhile - one laptop per child (http://laptop.org/)? (We're heading third - read "developing" world anyway).

Well the devil's always in the detail isn't it .... I don't think they ever said that every kid was going to get a laptop ( ie to take home )... it might have got interpreted as that ....
here's the actual policy ...
Australian Labor Party : Federal Labor's Education Revolution - A School Computer For Every Student In Years 9-12 (http://www.alp.org.au/media/1107/msloo140.php)
Basically they have said the every child between years 9-12 will have ACCESS to their own computer at school. It might not be a laptop but a desktop ... it's up to the individual schools what they do with the funding they get.
The better question might be .. when will that funding be allocated ?

And there was money/tax rebates for those who bought one for their children I believe... from memory which if I recall correctly isn't very good anymore!
And they have only just "sat" so it might take a bit longer than this. (Ask the Libs.... Rudd 78% ish and Nelson 8% approval, Lib response.. it will take a while for us to bounce back LOL)

dont know why the Govt needs to provide every child with a laptop or a pc
Most kids would have a pc or access to pc at home
Most parents could salary package a laptop
Parents could be given a tax rebate if they bought one for their child
In many ways its only part of a solution as you will also need to ensure each school kid had access to broadband internet to use the laptop and the software to drive it
As l understand it Govt wallers looking at in conjunction with State education bods as to how it the policy can be implemented
