View Full Version : Can I have a manual CDL lever in my 1995 TD5 Discovery II.

I know this is an old and apparently difficult question but here goes. Can I get the CDL lever found in the later D2’s fitted to my 1999 TD5 Disco II?

I know that I have the CDL in the transfer case. I followed all the descriptions on the net and confirmed this by way of serial number and inspection. I now want to be able to activate the CDL.

The only options I’ve either been offered or read about aren’t quite what I’d like. Those options are, add an extra lever (whether a cheap backyard option or expensive work shop option by an authorised dealer like Ritters $890.00 professional installed) or fit of an electric actuator (AMV Automotive $770.00). Climbing underneath the car with a 10mm spanner concerns me (but that’s another issue).

I want my car to look just like the vehicles released with the two axis levers found in the earlier, then later models (ie. up and down for high and low, left and right for CDL).

I’m told over the phone that it can’t be done but my simple mind can’t comprehend this! If I bought a 2003 D2 with the combined HIGH/LOW CDL lever, would I not be able to repair or replace it if it failed or was destroyed?

I’ve also been asked why I would want to do this anyway… I ask why not? I’ve found the TC to be inadequate. In my view and it seems to be shared by many on these forums, the CDL is required.

I hope someone can point me in the right direction and I hope that direction is somewhere in Melbourne...

I thank you all for your patience, my last two stupid questions where answered brilliantly.

Regards,

Milney

Yes you can fit a late 03 – 04 CDL shift to the standard DII. I was able to install it without removing the centre console.

The only modification you need to do is cut the metal plate on the gearbox tunnel to allow left – right lever movement as the original shift has only forward – back movement. If you are handy with a drill and file, you can enlarge the slot neatly with the centre console still in the car. The factory CDL lever is around $700 second hand.

Alternatively, you can fit a D1 CDL shift. This is a lot of work as the shift is mounted to the transfer case and not the gearbox tunnel. The D1 shift is also lever operated not cable to the transfer case CDL spigot. The factory D2 mounting method was adopted to remove driveline vibration in the car. A D1 CDL shift should be cheaper than a D2 shift, however there is far more effort to install.

Here’s a link to an installation pdf if you are interested in the D1 option:

Try out AMV in Ringwood. I recently got a CDL from a wrecked D2a for $440. There are new kits but a 2nd hand one is fine. Might cost $100 bucks to fit if your not so inclined.

Definitely worth doing and is the most reliable activation method.

The D1 shifter option MAY work on an AUTO but not on the manual. The part of the gearbox it mounts to on the D1 manual box is deleted on the D2 manual box.BEEN THERE TRIED THAT!!!!
Went diy backyard renos,works perfect!!!

I'm pretty sure 4x4Intellignece in Melbourne sell new ones a lot cheaper than that.

Thanks to all.

Firstly, you've all seen through my typo in the title of this thread. 1995 should 1999! That said, once you instilled the confidence in me that it could be done, I gave up on the old fashion phone method and went back to the net. I subsequently located the following thread that has step-by-step instructions on how to fit a 2004 Disco2a Hi/Low selector lever to a 2001 Disco2, complete with pictures!

http://www.aulro.com/afvb/projects-tutorials/38640-cdl-actuator-install-disco-ii.html

Having read through that post, and with McDisco’s reply in mind, I searched further. Rover Parts Plus in Ballarat have a conversation kit, but for $880.00!!! Land Rover parts - MANUAL DIFF LOCK TO SUIT DISCOVERY 2 TRANSFER CASE (http://www.roverparts.com.au/inc/sdetail/4457)

Sadly I won’t be rushing out for it at that price. Perhaps like McDisco, I’ll be fortunate enough to get one around the $400.00 mark at a wrecker or similar.

This is a win for me, I know it can be done, how it’s done and what I need to get it done.

Thanks again,

Milney

Try Les Richmond Automotive in Melbourne speak to Andrew or have a look at their web site Les Richmond Automotive P/L (http://www.lrautomotive.com.au) [Under white tiger]. They do a kit with a separate lever ,handle that comes up in front of the drivers seat .Only have to drill one hole for cable to pass through $400 for kit $550 installed looking at fitting theirs in mine as well cannot see a big problem in fitting it my self

For those interested, and it seems there’s few, I spoke with Simon from 4X4intelligence in Melbourne today (thanks to Slunnie above). Simon says he can source brand new D2a Hi/Lo CDL levers with cable etc for about $600. He’s going to confirm availability with me when I’m ready to go. Web address 4x4Discovery.com.au - "think outside ..." (http://www.4x4intelligence.com.au/)

I’ll post a new thread with all the confirmed details when I get them. I don’t reckon there’d be any other way to go but the one proper lever to do both! Just as Land Rover intended…

Good stuff mate! Simon is a good bloke and they like their discos at 4x4intellengence. A lot of the stuff on my disco - being recovery points, bash plate, truspeed and diff protector (soon to be) all comes from them!

Look forward to reading how you end up with it Milney. I'm thinking of doing mine as well, and I agree with you that keeping with the original is the best way to go.

Look forward to reading how yours turns out 2 Rocks. Discovery Auto supplied and fitted my bullbar and a couple of other odds & ends just after I bought the Disco. I'm thinking of fitting the CDL actuator to mine, and looking at the available options at the moment. Will probably buy the kit from someone and fit myself.
