Rims / Tyres for my 130

I have my old Def 110 with Disco rims and 235/85 16 Muds.

My new Def 130 is carrying the standard LR rims with 7.5 R 16 tyres.

I would like to keep the muds but I have a few questions:

1. Are the LR rims tubeless or are tubes required ?
In the vent I wish to swap over:
2. Will 7.5 R 16s go onto a 7" rim ?
3. Will 235/85's go onto the standard Def 130 rim (which I think is 6.5" ?) ?

4. Are Disco rims suitable for a 130 ? WOuld save a lot of trouble but I'd heard they weren't up tp the job.

My main aim is to keep my mud tyres and use them on the new beast, putting the less aggressive tyres across to the 110 which will be sold.

I can only answer Q 1.

You can have both tubeless and tubed genuine rims. My 130 came with tubed, but I sold them and got tubeless, which have part number ANR4583 stamped in them. I think the LR part number for these is 2160025 as that is stamped into the front of the rim.

Check out the ANR number on your rims and see if is the same as above.

I have been told the disco rims will not have a high enough load rating for a 130, but are OK for a 110 (I read that on a UK web-site, so dunno if it is gospel...... - someone correct me it that is utter rubbish)

Hi Vlad, I agree with David about the load rating of 130 rims.A tyre fitter locally who deals with lot of LRs told me the rims were rated for the extra load carrying capacity whereas 110 rims were not. Also, he said the tyres must be 10 ply equivalent, whatever that is in load ratings. My rims are tube type.I am running 235/85 tyres with no problems{ Mickey Thompson MTX }.Hope that is useful. question 3. 235/85R16 will definately go on 130 rims... i run these with michelin tubes.
question 1. have heard people running both tubed and tubeless with 130 rims, didnt know about the different part numbers???

I think the rims on mine are D1 rims. They have handled loads with no problems. The rims were on the rig when I bought it.

the tubed and tubeless versions are stamped as such.
If you do a search I've listed the part #'s in the past. ;)

The bead on the tubed version is very wide, and can be run tubeless successfully, although it isn't legal (insurance wriggle room). I was continually welding tubes to tyres, it's a pain in the posterior and if you have a sudden deflation, the tyre rolls off the rim with a tube anyway (speaking from experience. Happened at 100km/h through a corner.....), so a tyre fitter suggested running them 'differently' ;) . They've been run this way successfully for about 5 or 6 years now. no probs.

235/85 is an approved size, and 255/85/16 (33.3" diameter) is legal on a 6.5" rim, which is what I've run for years, although you lose even more lock....:(

Rick what brand of tyre do you use 255/85/16?I have 8-16 rims on my fender and that is the tyre size I want.I did run tubeless tyres on my original rims for almost 10 years with no problems. Pat

currently BFG MT, about to be replaced by Maxxis 762 Big Horns in the same size. (unless I change my mind :D)

The only other tyre I know of in that size is the Cooper ST. We used the ST years ago on SWMBO's Patrol, and they worked fine with better grip off road and dirt than the BFG AT's we've run for the last 4 years, but the BFG's last better (90,000km out of the last set and we were still living out in the sticks with the crap dirt roads at the time) and I was always worried about the micro cracking on the sidewalls of the ST's, which appeared about two weeks after fitting :eek:. I really liked them, and they cleared mud well too. The old farm had a lot of black soil and a little wheel spin had them self cleaning really well. Best 'AT' type tyre I've used in those circumstances.
It seems a lot of people have issues with tread blocks ripping, etc on rocks with the ST's, too. Ask Slunnie about them ;)

<edit> just noticed you said 8" rims Pat ? I think that's too wide for the 255's. Best check. optimum rim size is 7, and IIRC 7.5" is the widest rim.

The rims have 8x16 stamped on the inside of the center that I didn't notice till after I bought them but for $20 for all 5 in very good nick I am not complaining.They have 235's on them at the moment and they seem alright,I just want a little more lift. Pat

They were on Ebay,I bought them with tyres for $270,I sold the tyres for $250 so the rims were $20. Pat

Pat, get a ruler and measure between the beads to confirm the size, and out of curiosities sake, can you measure the back spacing ?

Pat, according to my BFG chart, maximum width rim for a 255/85 is 8", and a 235/85 is 7".
The Maxxis is a touch wider in section @ 10.3" than the BFG @ 10"

OK I have checked:

On the 130 the rims are marked ANR1534.
There are also marked 6 1/2 L x 16 x 20,6 (or as near as I can tell)
and are running Goodyear Wrangler AT's in 7.50 x 16. Unsure about tubes or not.

On the other hand my 110 iis running 7" Disco steelies with 235/85 16 BFG MT's (tubeless).

I need to know whether I can simply swap these tyres across onto the opposite rims, especially the issue regarding whether tubes are required for the 130 rims on my vehicle.

Id take it vlad. Youve got lockers now, you only need one wheel. one is enough to drag it around on the rotors.... be a man!

This doesn't jelp me - having the rivetted earlier rims means I'll have to run my BFG MT's with tubes until such time as I can get some of the later rims. Bugger bugger bugger
