for trip to Australia.

12 month multiple entry visa applied for. Embassy want proof of funds.

Carnet applied for. Estimates from shipping agents coming in. Looking at flight costs etc.

Even got details of spectator packages from Outback Challenge, although they sent it in a zip SIT file format which I had to get my IT consultant to open. Form will be faxed later today.

110 has extra fuel tank fitted, 70 litre water tank, engine mounted compressor fitted, very extensive service, new Kenlowe fitted, head gasket replaced (boiled engine due to fan failure on last trip!), underside steam cleaned, awaiting waxoyling. Inside has beeen stripped out, old carpets thrown away, new rubber matting throughout.

Things are going on apace. Hopefully the 110 will be shipped out at end of March.

Keep your fingers crossed for me, that your embassy decide that I am allowed in!

Regards

Brendan

PS Thanks for all help and advice that AULRO forum users have given me in last few months. Might even manage to meet up with a few of you Aussie LR owners for a few :twobeers:

Brendan,

Are you the same "leeds" from LRO? Do you recall my name from LRBoards, the ex-LRO forums, the "Queer Queen from Down Under"...? At one point I was quite a prolific poster:o? On any account - a get together in Melbourne is a MUST:D

Will be in Melbourne/Victoria area around the first two weeks in June.

After spectating at the Outback Challenge I am going to Adelaide to fly to Singapore to join up with my partner for a week. Will be returning to Adelaide around 2/3rd June then head towards Melbourne to do some of the shorter tracks before heading north for some longer tracks. Currently studying Great Desert Tracks for ideas.

Any suggestions for other reading materials?

Joel for my sins I register as leeds on all the LR forums I go on. Must admit I did wonder why you got the title as 'Queer queen from down under' Do you want to explain that one away? My title on LRO used to be 'Evilgit'

Don't bother getting too carried away with steam cleaning.. it'll have to be done again when the car gets here.

So8nds great mate. Give us a shout when you get to Brissy

Oh And bring a Viscose fan with you . Cheap to buy and belive me you may need to put it back on . Kenlowe are ok but not good enough for the heat in the outback. Seen far too many time cars with kenlowes over heat and then have a viscouse put back on and be fine. Just my bit of advice. Last thing you want is a truck over heating in the middle of no where

I think for touring Australia, having good accurate maps and a good GPS will improve your experience immensely.
You could start by looking at the HEMA maps. Welcome to Hema Maps Home Page (http://www.hemamaps.com)
They have both hardcopy and digital maps that you can run on OziExplorer on a laptop or PDA in your vehicle. The HEMA maps also have a lot of information on the back re places to see.
There's other good maps around too.

Had a slight problem with Kenlowe fan in Portugal over Xmas/New Year. On a long uphill low box climb the engine got rather warm. Did 1500 miles after with no problems as long as driving at reasonable speed. Head gasket has been renewed, there was some damage to old gasket but this was done as a precautionary measure. New Kenlowe has been fitted.

Viscose fan will be part of the spares kit with me.

All advice about spares, camping kit etc gratefully received.

Not sure when be in Brisbane area likely to be late July/early August.

It's not interesting at all:)

I posted this image in response to an unfair moderation (since a picture is worth 1000 words):

Someone mis-translated it and asked "Why do you want to be the Fortune Queen?":o

Following this blunder I attained "that" name.

Yes, unfortunately Priscilla did come in to it as well (or should that be come out?). The British have a fixation with that film.

Brendan

If you'd like a place to stay for a night or two, and a place to leave your Landie securely whilst you are up in Singapore then give us a hoy. We live here:
http://www.gestalt.net.au/Defender/Redhill.JPG

so there is plenty of room to throw up a tent or whatever and a friendly Dobermann to guard your truck! 25 Kms out of Adelaide up in the Adelaide Hills.

Send me a PM if you want more details etc. You'd be most welcome.

Cheers
David

Thanks for your offer David (Spudboy) pm sent.

Does anyone know what Australian customs/quarentine service like with tents? Or would it be simplier just to buy camping gear in Australia?

I'd buy stuff here. When you (re)enter the country they ask if you've been on any farm in the last 2 weeks. So I'm guessing they'll be worried about anything that's been set up in the bush (or whatever you call your manicured forsests over there;)).

Why not fill the back of the truck with mud-consoles to sell once you get here. A 26GBP saving on the postage should see them all get snapped up.

But I digress. The GBP should give you good buying power here in Australia for camping gear. However if you go to the backpacker hostels and look on the noticeboards, you can often find car loads of camping gear being sold off cheap. Basically they've bought it off another backpacker, done their trip, and now have to sell it in 2 days before their flight departs.

Enjoy your antipodian adventure.
