I am looking for a head unit that has bluetooth and ipod connectivity (ideally) but I have no need for a CD player. (As far as I can tell in a Defender the CD slot is just a way for dust to get into the unti and screw it up).

Does such a thing exist ?

At the moment my new Deefer has a Rangie head unit (but not working and i dont have the code) whcih i plan to put across into the Rangie (see my other thread in this forum) and get the code. Very convenient.

Anyway as always advice and commenst appreciated.

Ha, ha ha ha ha ha.

Defender.

Stereo.

Had a Sony cd player that worked fine.

Now in the Defender, press go forward a track and it goes back. Press go back and nothing happens. Press the cd/fm/am button and it goes forward a track.

Bah.

Cheers
Simon

the only advice i can give you being a 130 driver :D

is don't waste your money on a good stereo simply because of the dust factor behind the unit:angel:
they don't tend to last long at all:(

Vlad, I cant vouch for the seller but I am looking at this for the boat

eBay Motors: S05 Motorcycle amplifier 360 watts 12V (item 130170336997 end time Mar-02-08 16:51:16 PST) (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/S05-Motorcycle-amplifier-360-watts-12V_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742Q2em153Q2el1262 QQcategoryZ35580QQihZ003QQitemZ130170336997)

obvioulsy doesnt have bluetooth, but does have your MP3 input??? pretty smal and although "not waterproof" it appears to be relatively robust... Could hide it in the cubby box.

I have had my Panasonic CD layer in the Isuzu County for over 10 years.
Its handled all the rough terain, and where we live now is dust city!!!
No problems with dust.

I've been running my ipod through a Belkin unit that the FM radio tunes into.
Works OK , and all you need is a FM radio, minimal working parts.

I am however going to hard wire an input to an amp when I refit the dash area. With the stereo, ipod, phone,GPS, Street pilot,UHF radio,HF control, it will be like NASA mission control.

Thats sounds more like what I need, those sorts of things wired into the speakers. Got tips ?

i was looking at the JVC KD-BT1 (look at JVC Australia (http://www.jvc-australia.com) ) but the RRP is $549 (ouch!!) which is excessive I think, plus I have doubts about its survival in a Defender.

i best explain more about mine

the radio will work fine and the mp3 input works:D
but the dust kills the CD eject mechanism :(
sometimes they come out and sometimes they dont...........
once they get stuck halfway in or out the CD is stuffed

Try this thread (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/general-chat/48329-ultimate-07-defender-ice-solution.html).

The Pioneer DEH P8950BT (http://www.pioneer.com.au/products/car_entertainment/CD_Tuners/index.html) unit still has a CD but it is behind the face so no dust really gets in there. Very Star Trek!

Well a suggestion for cheap and robust is an FM radio and an ipod FM transmitter. Maybe even one of those Eurovox things that came with the Defender.

And nobody will even think of stealing it.

Or can you get an amplifier with those inputs?

I should also mention that the Pioneer unit was on sale at Strathfield when I got it for $499 (retail is $799 or something ridiculous). The iPod connection is full speed so the menus work on the head unit without any delays.

Have a look here (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60962), here (http://forums.ilounge.com/archive/index.php/t-78383.html), and here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php't=437233).

Aux input on stereo with cable to ipod and maybe one of these (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007Z7XTO).

Or amplifier, and same cable, no moving parts and easy to hide.

See a dentist for your blue tooth.:D

Hiline I have had the same CD problem with my expensive Eclipse unit.

Solmanic - I couldnt finf an affordable pioneer unit with the specs I was after and also wasnt sure as to the robustness. How long have you had yours ?

It's only been in the vehicle since December so I can't really comment on the longevity.

I do appreciate the single, big round knob. It makes it easy to control when driving and not fiddly. Like I said, the face pivots out to reveal the CD slot, but I have only used it once since most of the time the iPod is connected. The face also unclips so it can be stored away entirely if things are getting hairy.

I think most units are much the same when it comes to durability. All plastic with pretty lights.

Try these guys (http://www.ryda.com.au/Pioneer-Car-CD-MP3-DEH-P8950BT-with-Bluetooth-p/dehp8950bt.htm)for a good deal. It's only $50 more than what Strathfield were selling them for.

Just grab a $120 special from supercrap or somewhere with the mp3 input on the front and tape over the cd slot...

My fender still has its normal radio from factory... tapedeck doesn't work, radio doesn't work, but the aux input works perfectly with my iPod :D:D:D

If you are going to hard wire the ipod all you need to do is run a cable with a mini stereo phono jack ( same as headphone jack) on one end, and rca plugs, (usually red and white) at the other end. Plug the rca plugs to the input of a cheap amp/eaqualizer and the output to your speakers, making sure the speakers will handle the power of the amp.

Using the Belkin FM transmitter all you need is a FM radio. I find the transmitter needs to be on top of the dash to prevent unwanted interferance.
Remember of course with this device if anyone pulls up beside you they can tune into your ipod.
