Fish is a bit like fruit. If I never had another bit of either again in my life, it wouldn't worry me one bit.

Altghough I don't mind the smell of fruit, seafood is pretty whiffy and I don't like the smell.

Ahh. Commercial fishermen were the bane of my life when I was in Telstra - I was Marine Manager and dealt with them - and was occasionally threatened by them. I once went on a raid with the AFP on a fisherman's boat. It worried me when the AFP guys all strapped on sidearms and bullet proof jackets - but didn't give me one. :(

I'm glad I didn't have to work on their boats - they stank!

you get a Descent Seafood Platter for 2 down at Fish Markets for about $30 and it'll quite easily feeds 2.

When we visited NZ a few years back, my sister's boyfriend went to the trouble of catching something from the sand on a beach and frying it up for us to eat. I think they were a tad put out when we refused it. Whitebait might have been what it was called.

They seemed to think it was a delicacy.

Yeah, right! Like sheep's eyes are a delicacy? :o

A few years back Xtreme led a High Country trip and one of the things he arranged was for us to go fishing at a trout farm. I caught some (as one must) but someone else had to take them off the hook for me (the last time I'd been fishing was literally 50 years ago - in 1958.).

I took them home but I didn't eat them. I think my wife and daughter did.

I used to hate going to family-in-law Christmans parties as they always served up seafood. They had to make other arrangements for me.

As you can see, I'm a keen fisherman. :D

Fishing is what our family does . I caught my first fish at the age of 4 . A red fin out of the colac lake . I was victorian junior champ twice before the age of 13 and my old man had a room just for his trophys .
The worst part of fishing was losing my dad to a freak wave down at Apollo Bay 17 years ago next month . The only reason i'm still here is i had my first game of footy that day so i didnt go fishing .

I love fish too.
I love yellowtail and tuna best but must be fresh and raw.
To me, a seared Tuna steak is a monument to tastelessness!
I love Red Emperor, I worship it!
Blue Groper, Barra, Coral Trout, whiting, Canadian Salmon, snapper, and then there are all the crustaceans....
I like bream too but I can live without trout .

Hate cod, really hate cod, like mullet tho!

i love red emp too, the only drawback in QLD is the min size is 55cm, the best eating red is about 40cm when they are still striped up??? oh well?

I may need to change my ideal... the best is a fresh caught trout, into the frypan on the boat with some fresh bread and a bit of tartare :) or fresh speared cray seared in butter on the boat... or a nice longtail / yellowfin sashimi with appropriate condiments out on the briny...

fresh is best!

Believe it or not Ben Lexcen of Yacht designer fame did exactly the same thing....at an intimate Sushi restaurant where he was a guest of some Japanese V.I.P's who were negotiating with him.
We warned him, the Japanese host got alarmed and had the interpreter warn him, but he went ahead and did it anyway. He coughed and snotted green slick all over the place.
The Japanese host regarded it impolite to laugh at his guest's discomforture but the Aussie woman interpreter and I ****ed ourselves.
I thought I would top the evening off by introducing him to Ooni!
Disappointingly, he loved it.

Here's some fishy trivia for ya.

1788, the first fleet has been in Sydney Harbour for a few days and a bunch of blokes go out to do some fishing. They meet up with some of the local Aboriginals and get into conversation about fishing - I'm using conversation in the widest hand-gesture interpretation - the Aboriginals give them some pointers on bait and best methods of catching fish, all the usual things you do on striking up a conversation with a local when fishing in a new spot. The locals also made very clear that you don't eat Mullet, taste like crap. Again with the very clear sign language and hand gestures.

The more things change.

Cheers
Simon

This thread has made me really hungry for some fish!

My best fish and chips is home made, but I live in hope of finding a good fishanchippie!

Most insulting Fishanchippie has to be on Oxford Street Leederville Perth.
Ordered a piece of snapper and small chips (3 choices, S M L), paid $15.50 and got a burnt piece of fish where the batter was charred in colour, and burnt underdone chips that were crunchy like apples but get this.....there were 7 chips! Spuds around here for commercial purchases are under 1:50 a kilo!
I politely pointed out that the oil was much too hot (being wise to the cooking trade) and got a tirade telling me this is how he did it for all his customers and they were happy.
I responded in kind asking which was likelier: That the entire population of Leederville were tasteless imbeciles who would spend heaps on scorched food despite having grown up eating fine examples of it..... or that he was a wannabe businessman who didn't have the intelligence to create value or treat a customer appropriately........ got my money back and had a laugh, got a vegetarian pasty up the road.

Salt & Pepper Calamari salad at JD's bar in Merimbula is my pick for squid.

Most fish is good it depends how it is cooked, when it is cooked and your personal taste.
Salmon is great fresh caught or smoked or in patties if older.
King George is great anytime (one in the fridge caught last night).
Also a Black Bream and they are ok.
Even rock cod is ok if you steam it.
Trumpeter which most through back is yummy fresh.
As said some fish is better fresh, while some freezes well.
Where do you stop. All the above (except slimy rock cod for me) plus gummy shark, bronzey, swallowtail, black arsed cod, nanagai, etc etc

The best i've ever had is from a f&c shop in Bright Vic of all places, called Roksalt. God damn it was good, and i'm a fishermans son so have had my fair share.:)

They must have to wait for a pretty high tide to go fishing at Bright!

A friend used to manage the Cairns branch of a Brisbane major catering and hospitality supplier. They were taken over by a Sydney group. The new owners used to send him pallets of frozen Orange Roughy and other southern waters rubbish fish to sell. North Queenslanders are used to fresh reef fish, barramundi, mud crabs, Torres Strait crayfish etc. This crap is almost unsaleable up there. He used to first offer it to institutions, hospitals, nursing homes, & the like at barely over cost price, then to local retailers who were known Cheap Charlies, price before quality. Anything left (most of it) would be written off and taken to the tip. Sometimes he just took it to the tip. Sydney boy wonders could never be convinced that stuff they sold down there was unsaleable elsewhere.

G'day Stevo,

The water is now briliant, the fish are returning and the rivers are healthy.

Since the big company's have either closed or cleaned up the result is great. I can remember Penguin Surf club guys wading through foam to get to the water. The red colour on rocks all along the coast from the old Tioxide has disappeared.

People are catching Mako off Devonport  and surrounding areas, big Flatties and lots of Squid and Whiting off Port Sorell, King fish and Snapper from the mouth of the Tamar.

I am only a mug fisher but still getting some good catches. With the bad weather up north at the moment we may become the next great tourist destination :D. (if only it would get a bit warmer)

Cheers Andy

Jeez. You're South of the 41st Parrell. No chance of that happening.:D

I remember with great fondness my dad and I fishing on the banks of the Forth @ Turners Beach in the late 60's and early 70's.

We got Brim, Salmon, Mullet and the occasional sea run trout. I continued fishing it through to the late 70's until there was nothing in the estuary at all. :(

After a few years on the Mainland I went to work for some scumbags @ Heybridge. Alui something Chemical Refineries they were, if only the public knew what went on there.:mad::mad:

I'm so pleased to hear what you have said. Where did the flatties come from?

Hi Stevo,

The flatties were from Port Sorell, approx 10km straight out from the boat ramp, 150 ft water.

I'm no greenie, but some of the changes of recent yesrs have been great!

Andy.
