Brand New D2a Hi/Lo CDL lever. I finally found it!

I’d like to thank everyone for their help. After posting two threads relating to my traction dilemma (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery/51779-my-traction-control-working.html and http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery/51797-can-i-have-manual-cdl-lever-my-1995-td5-discovery-ii.html), I’ve finally found where we can buy brand new Discovery 2a Hi/Lo CDL selector levers for our Discovery 2 vehicles that “missed out” on the lever when manufactured (so long as you have the transfer case CDL spigot). These are the details…

4X4intelligence can supply them brand new for around $620.00 depending on the exchange rate, this was the price as of week ending 23/02/2008. Delivery takes about 2-3 weeks from the UK, plus another week or so for delivery from 4X4intelligence to you. There’s a slightly higher delivery fee if posting outside of Melbourne.

While second hand Hi/Lo CDL levers are sometimes available, it seems to me they are very hard to come by and from my enquiries are rarely found under about $700.00, although lucky for McDisco and Redback there are exceptions. Having said that, I hadn’t found one for less than $880.00 second-hand until I spoke to Simon at 4X4intelligence. That said he’s making nothing on them and doing it as more of a service. I’m hoping for his sake he can draw more business as a result of his efforts.

Gees Simon's gonna like you Milney! Seriously though I would have gone through Simon if I didnt happen across one so cheap. :D

The thing I like about 4x4intelligence is that its pretty much a one stop shop for everything for a Series 2 disco. And the thing is that most of it has been rigorously tested by the guys...Michael Samootin still runs a D2, Simon used to and has upgrade to his "latte sipping" D3 (and scretly its the missus's car...:o) and David...well I dont know about David. I think he broke his D2..:(

But the thing is they started the business because they loved their discos and wanted to work out some way we (most of the guys from d2au.com) could source good equipment.

Hope you use the shifter a lot! Whats next on the list?!

Funny you should say that Zute. I climbed under mine for the first time today, wasn’t that hard…

McDisco as for wish list, I’m not really sure. Well, it’s the order that I’m not sure on. The CDL lever will be first. I read in 4X4 Australia that it needed to be done first. I’ve lost the issue of that magazine (April 2007 I think) so can only remember item no. 1… Then:-

ARB Winch Bar
Winch (probably a WARN Tabor, 9K lb enough?…)
Snorkel
Chip (maybe tunit)

In there somewhere I need to find a CD stacker, mine didn’t come with one! I’m a big fan of the tunes so it’s killing me.

If you havent already done it I would be doing a 2inch lift on the suspension and fitting better tyres. The rest of the stuff can some later. But a lift and tyres will let you get out amongst it.

Funny you might say that. My original draft on the last post went along the lines of… “I nearly bought a Disco 2 that had an ARB winch bar, chip, snorkel and a good, lift. My lady turned her nose up at the lift.” I decided to delete it, I didn’t want to sound like a pussy…

In actual fact I would’ve bought it anyway except the bloke selling it wasn’t ready to let it go until he received “his company car”. He went onto tell me that he’d expected it weeks ago but it still hadn’t come. I was ready to go and very excited I might add. I bought this one about 3 days later.

I’ll give some thought to the lift. My biggest fear is getting stuck while on my own… That makes me think I want a winch. I’m open to comments though. Perhaps I need to get out there with some experienced blokes and see what she can do.

Most people get the winch last. If you have a lift and better tyres your cars ability is improved a lot which is excellent given that a standard disco is fairly capable in itself. It will give you better clearance and better articulation.:)

I bought mine with the bar and winch in it and I had to used it mainly cause the suspension hadnt been lifted and I was running old AT tyres. Since doing the tyres and lift I only get stuck cause I am doing harder tracks or because of my own stupidity... :o:D

Another thing to consider is that when you whack on a bullbar and winch (and driving lights) that is a lot of weight over the front of the disco. Standard suspension wont handle the weight and will sag, thereby reducing your approach angle. So you will find you will get stuck more because of this. Plus the bullbar act like a plough on any track with ruts.

Perhaps post another thread asking people what you should get fitted first? I am sure they will say suspension and tyres...

A less elegeant solution than the D2a lever is the T-handle cable-operated CDL actuator sold by Graeme Cooper. I bought a kit a few years ago for a bit over $400. You need to drill a hole in the floor in front of the driver's seat for the handle and attach a bracket to the transfer case. The only problem is the TC/ABS issue if you forget to disengage the CDL before switching off.
